Nature in Motion: Ian Cooke was paddle boarding by when he saw a mother bear and her cub high in a tree. As he got closer, in the right picture, the mama bear starts to climb back down the tree and remained at the base of the tree as a means of protecting her young!

The weather has been glorious - with a rain storm on Sunday overnight to keep nature's balance, AND sunshine in the forecast for all week!

PaBIA's now has two 'events' underway: Photo Contest with an accompanying story AND the newest one, PaBIA's Scavenger Hunt! !! All the details are below but our Virginia Skuce, Director for Member Activities and Savannah Richardson, a team member, have worked together to bring to you a really fun event to do in your own time over these next 3 weeks! I hope everyone enjoying PaB will partake in this fun adventure. How well do you know PaB????

PaBIA SCAVENGER HUNT

Begins TODAY

As a result of having to cancel all large events this summer, PaBIA has created a new, fun, yet safe activity for all cottagers!

The PaBIA Scavenger Hunt is a 3-week long Pointe au Baril adventure activity that includes six categories: Nature, Wildlife, Safety, Activities, Landmarks and Flags.

Participants will have to find the items or complete the activities outlined in the hunt and provide photo evidence using this "Hunt" game board . Each completed category earns one ballot toward the prize.

The scavenger hunt will run from July 29 ^th to August 19 ^th . The Submissions will be done via drop box (see hunt instructions for details). The hunt can be done individually or as a family.

Grand prize will be a $100 gift certificate to the Ojibway Club Gift Shop , with additional prizes of ice creams cones and PaBIA merchandise.

Messages From PaB's Eyes & Ears: Marine Patrol

Marine Patrol is happy to safeguard the PaBIA community. What reminded the MP’s of this was an accident last week Thursday near Payne Marine involving a Seadoo and two individuals. When the Marine Patrol arrived at the scene, we were happy to have the support of the community while assisting the individuals. We are also happy to know that despite a pandemic, we are willing as a community to help each other when in a time of need. To the couple who helped the MP’s while they were in the water and volunteered their boat until EMS was called, once again, thank you.

PaBIA Marine Patrol has a message for all

Jet Skiers and Speed/Wakeboarding Boats:

Please slow down in tight channels that are less than 10 metres wide, the common rule for small channels is a maximum of 10 k/hr

Please be courteous : for those on the jet skis please avoid tailgating other pleasure crafts to cross through their wake for jumping or for annoyance. Many members have expressed their concern to the MP’s of scenarios when they have either been cut off or overcome by jet skiers and/or larger boats, causing terror and unwanted wakes to our members' boats or residences.

Please be cautious of those who have the right of way such as smaller boats, kayaks

and sailboats. Slow down for these pleasure crafts and respect them by giving them a wide berth. In the case of a sailing race, please circumvent the racing boats by going behind ALL sailboats - as your wake can and does affect the sailboat's performance.

Remember to please wear lifejackets while partaking in water recreation; for example, when on a jet ski or wakeboarding, it is highly recommended to wear a life jacket in case of an accident similar to last Thursday's. As the skipper of any boat, it is mandatory that you have, at minimum, the same number of lifejackets for as many people on board.

As a follow up to last week's eBlast regarding:

the borders closed to non essential travel until at least August 21st and
the likelihood that many will not be able to come to Pte Au Baril this year with
PaBIA's desire to support our American and overseas members by arranging for a late summer cottage patrol at the organization's expense,

PaBIA is also aware that many of our non Canadian members have had friends, neighbours or their contractors checking their cottagers throughout the summer and do not need this service.

Keeping that in mind and to save unnecessary expense, this extra service will be provided ONLY to those members who

need/want it and
REQUEST it by emailing Nancy.

As for the 2020-2021 Fall, Winter and Spring Cottage Patrols for those unable to get to their cottages this summer, Bruce Tiffin, PaBIA's Off season Cottage Patroller, will punch existing cottage patrol tags a second time - resulting in 6 punches rather than the traditional 3 and will replace any missing tags to give you the assurance that all your properties are checked and the patrol indicated by the punch mark.

ALL CAN BECOME MORE “WAKE AWARE”!

We value the entire PaB community with whom we share this incredible paradise. With the record high water levels we are experiencing this summer, we are all concerned about the impact of boat wakes on swimmers, other boaters and on endangered docks, boathouses, moorings and shorelines. It is for the safety of all and the consideration of property that we review what we are calling “wake awareness”!

Be aware of the following when driving:

the impact of the boat wake on swimmers, other small craft, canoes and kayaks,
the waves created by different boating speeds (planing, plowing and bow-down slow),
checking for other boats ahead and behind when accelerating or slowing down (the bow is very high and difficult to see over),
speeding up or slowing down too quickly (causing a bigger, more forceful wake),
where to enjoy water sports (only in open bays away from shorelines), and
shoreline erosion (driving speed under 10km/h when operating close to shore does not cause damage).

In addition, because of the variety of the bays and channels of our unique geography, boaters need to practise caution and vigilance when in “extra care zones” like Brignall Banks, Hemlock Channel, the S-turn (so marked on the PaBIA maps) and many others.

Reporting an infraction

The owner of the boat is responsible for any damage to property regardless of who is driving that boat. Please call the OPP toll-free at 1-888-310-1122 to file a report. With enough information, they will pay a visit to the owner.

2020 Ojibway Art Show ONLINE - New Website

July 31-August 9

It’s almost here … the 2020 Ojibway Art Show ONLINE opens on Friday July 31 at 5:00 pm and runs for 10 days, until Sunday August 9 at 5:00 pm. The NEW website will be www.ojibwayclubartshow.com . It will go live as of July 31 at 5:00 pm to view and purchase all available artwork for sale. Purchases must be made via credit card (art sales can’t be charged to member accounts).

You asked, we listened … would you like first pick of this year’s artwork? On Friday July 31 at 12:00 noon , we’ll grant 10 people “Front of the Line” access to the online sale. For a minimum donation of $200, you will gain access to the website at 4:30 pm to purchase one piece. The first 10 people to email: [email protected] on Friday July 31 at 12:00 noon, with the subject heading “Front of the Line”, will receive this early access.

Sail Racing This Saturday August 1 ^st - 2 p.m.

Middle Reach Course

Our August series will start this Saturday August 1 at 2 pm on the Middle Reach course. We have decided to use this area for the summer as it offers excellent courses for multiple wind directions and is central.

Our starting system is 5/4/1/Start. For a quick refresher on the rules, flags and the starting sequence, see Racing Rules .

July Series Winners

Last Saturday we held our first races, which were "winner take" all for the July season. The winners were:

Albacore - Rainer Kaufmann/Madeleine Arsenault (it helps to be the only boat in the fleet!)
Laser - Andy Rogers
Flying Scot - Eric and Andrew Vanderwal (is it getting boring winning all the time?)

COVID 19 Reminders

A reminder that our races must comply with the Ontario Stage 3 COVID requirements . You are encouraged to read them, but a few simple reminders:

If you are sailing with another person, please make sure they are either in your family/social circle "bubble" or wear masks (not easy but possible)
Stay at least 2 meters away from other boats and the Race Committee boat, including at the start and at mark rounding

About the presenters:

Barry Davidson is the Forest Management Plan author, guiding the planning and silvicultural programs at Westwind since 1998. He previously worked as a Forester and Project Forester for the Vegetation Management Alternatives Program for MNRF and as the Program Manager for the Forest Biodiversity Program for Wildlife Habitat Canada.

Margaret Scott started at Westwind in the winter of 2017 after completing the Master of Forest Conservation program at the University of Toronto. Margaret is a Registered Professional Forester.

The ecology and behaviour of Canada Jays in Algonquin Park

Although Canada Jays are common residents of our North American boreal forests, their natural history and ecology remains somewhat of a mystery, even to those that see them regularly. Using a combination of long-term data and recent experiments, Dr. Norris will discuss the year-round ecology of this fascinating and highly intelligent bird, including what factors influence their survival and reproductive success. He will also address why we have observed over a 50% decline of Canada Jays at the southern edge of their range and how this may be related to long-term changes in climate.
