City of New Orleans Provides Update on Hurricane Zeta Clean Up and Recovery Efforts

NEW ORLEANS — Today, the City of New Orleans provided an update on a phased-approach for cleanup and recovery efforts following Hurricane Zeta, which includes garbage and recycling collection; roadway, park and playground cleanup; as well as emergency debris removal. Public safety is our priority; residents are reminded to use extreme caution around debris and to report downed trees or limbs in the public right-of-way to 311.

Phase 1 – Garbage and Recycling (Ongoing)
Regularly scheduled garbage and recycling collections continue for those properties that are eligible for these City services. Residents are advised to adhere to the following household solid waste guidelines:

HOUSEHOLD SOLID WASTE (these are items for pickup during regularly scheduled collections)
  • Trash/garbage (place items in bags before placing in carts) and recycling carts
  • Bulky waste -second collection day (Wednesdays in the French Quarter/DDD) only: Up to six bags of leaves and up to six secured bundles of tree limbs cut in lengths of 4’ or less and less than 12” in diameter. See nola.gov/sanitation for complete bulky waste collection guidelines
Phase 2 – Roadway Clearing (Underway)
The Departments of Parks and Parkways; Sanitation; Public Works; The Mosquito, Termite, and Rodent Control Board; and the Louisiana National Guard continue to clear streets, parks and playgrounds as well as remove items from major thoroughfares. In the last 72 hours, there have been more than 800 tree emergencies, over 200 downed Entergy poles, and hundreds of traffic light issues reported.

Phase 3 – Emergency Debris Removal (Begins Friday, Nov. 6, following Phase 2)
The City of New Orleans has activated its emergency debris removal contracts to assist with post storm-related cleanup. To allow residents additional time to organize debris and ensure safety during collection, removals will begin on Friday, Nov. 6 once roadway clearing activity has been completed.

Residents are advised to adhere to the following storm debris guidelines.

STORM DEBRIS SEGREGATED BY THE FOLLOWING CATEGORIES FOR REMOVAL BY THE CITY’S EMERGENCY DEBRIS CONTRACTORS:

Reminders:
  • Debris must be placed between the sidewalk and the curb for removal by the City or its contractors.
  • Avoid placement of storm debris waste under or on power lines, near trees, utility poles/boxes, fire hydrants, behind parked cars or on neutral grounds.
  • Only debris resulting from Hurricane Zeta is eligible for removal by the City’s emergency debris removal contractors.
  • Any work done by contractors is ineligible for debris removal services by the City or its contractors
  • Commercial properties and properties serviced by private trash contracts are ineligible to receive bulk waste collection or debris removal services by the City or its contractors.

7 Bars In New Orleans That Are Loaded With Fascinating History
It’s no secret that New Orleans has a lot of bars. When you’re looking to unwind after a long day, you have hundreds of options to choose from. With a city as old as New Orleans, it should come as no surprise that even our bars have a fascinating history behind them. Let’s take a look at some of our favorites.
1. Tujague’s Bar

For over 160 years, people have been turning to Tujague’s to grab a drink. It was the first bar in New Orleans to introduce the concept of a stand-up bar, so those on horseback could stretch their legs. A century and a half later, virtually not much has changed from the antique mirror that was shipped from France in 1856 to the beautiful cypress bar. 823 Decatur St., New Orleans, LA 70116

Coronavirus in Louisiana:

COLOR THE WORLD ORANGE DAY
The first Monday in November is dedicated to bringing awareness to Complex Regional Pain Syndrome and Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy with Color the World Orange Day.
Complex Regional Pain Syndrome and Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy (CRPS) involves high levels of nerve impulses sent to an affected site in the body. Medical experts believe the condition is a result of a dysfunction in the central or peripheral nervous system.
Symptoms vary in severity and usually occur more in women than men. Pain can be intense or worsen over time. In the event of an injury, CRPS can flair and spread beyond the site of the injury.
Other symptoms include:
  • stiff and swollen joints
  • decreased mobility
  • changes in hair and nail growth
  • skin changes – color, texture, and temperature may be affected
There is no specific test or cure for CRPS. Treatment focuses on pain relief, physical therapy, and psychotherapy.

NATIONAL DEVILED EGG DAY
National Deviled Egg Day features a favorite hors-d’oeuvre or side dish for parties, holidays, family reunions, and potluck dinners. Deviled eggs are the star of the show each year on November 2nd.
This well-loved food wows guests during the holidays. Designers have even created specially designed carrying dishes and plates. The deli section of the grocery store prepares packaged deviled eggs, and they can be found in some convenience stores, too.
Other names for this devilish dish include eggs mimosa, stuffed egg, salad eggs, or dressed egg. To make them, shell hard-boiled eggs, cut them in half, and scoop out the yolk. The yolk is mixed with other ingredients such as mayonnaise and mustard and then added back into the white. The possibilities are endless!
Eggs are quite versatile when it comes to making simple dishes elegant. The deviled egg is another example of taking the humble egg and transforming it with one or two simple ingredients. The final result steals the show. Colorful relishes, spicy peppers, pimentos or savory herbs, elevate deviled eggs to a spectacular and tasty morsel. Additionally, the variety offers entirely new flavor profiles demonstrating just how delicious this family favorite can be.

In an era before containerized freight shipment, cargo at the Port of New Orleans had to be manually loaded and unloaded. This break-bulk cargo could be bales of cotton, barrels or hogsheads of sugar, molasses, rice, or flour, sacks of coffee, tea, or spices. or wooden crates of anything from champagne to shoes. Of course, we have all seen bananas being unloaded by hand from man-to-man.
The maximum size of these loads were determined by the capabilities of the longshore crews and the tools and conveyances at their disposal. Early riverboats employed a retractable gangplank for longshoremen to use, but as steamers became larger and larger, the tools of the trade had to adapt. In this photograph from the Port of New Orleans, a system of ropes and pulleys is being used in combination with a very steep ramp to lift what appears to be bags of flour onto the ship from the handcart on the left.
My appreciation and admiration for the ingenuity and dexterity of the longshoremen at the port of New Orleans rises as I contemplate the near Herculean effort necessary to move and load cargo. For example, the typical productivity level of a longshoremen crew was five to ten tons per hour (10,000 to 20,000 pounds), which implies that ships spent a large share of their commercial life at ports being loaded or unloaded. By comparison, a modern gantry crane is capable of handling 500 tons per hour.

For Steamboat we have an 1892 photograph from the Detroit Publishing Company entitled "Steamboats Along the Levee, New Orleans."
The first vessel seen on the far left is a catamaran center-wheel ferry named Thomas Pickles. Built in Jeffersonville, Indiana in 1892 and initially owned by the Union Ferry Company. It would later be operated by the Algiers Public Service Company and the Jackson Avenue - Gretna Ferry Company. It could carry 50 cars and 250 passengers. It was lost during Hurricane Betsy on September 9, 1965.
Behind the Thomas Pickles are the Imperial and the Chalmette as well as three tugboats.

"New Orleans: Tested Again" is a series of black and white photos showing New Orleanians going about daily life, such as grocery shopping, attending church and returning to schools.
Inspired by exhibitions displayed on the fences of Paris' Luxembourg Gardens, "New Orleans: Tested Again" will be attached to the fences of the Consulate General at 2406 Prytania St. The photos will be on display through Nov. 23.
"The history of France and New Orleans is long, rich and extremely important," a short exhibit statement says. "For more than 300 years, in good and bad times, we have stood together. During this worldwide pandemic we are once again side by side. Together we will thrive."

Hosted by d.b.a. New Orleans and StageIt
Every Wednesday Streaming LIVE on StageIt from d.b.a in New Orleans.

Walter “Wolfman” Washington has been a mainstay in the New Orleans music scene since the early 1960s. He cut his teeth backing up some of the best singers and performers in New Orleans history including Lee Dorsey, Johnny Adams, and Irma Thomas before putting together his long time band The Roadmasters, who have been burning down and burning up local and national stages since their first gigs in the 1980s. This new record confirms what fans have known for years: Walter “Wolfman Washington has soul to go along with that fire.

French Market Place
11-5-20
NEW ORLEANS — the City of New Orleans in partnership with the French Market Corporation, will begin a weekly demonstration of the French Market Place concept within the broader Reimagining the French Quarter initiative. This will involve closing one block of French Market Place between Governor Nicholls Street and Ursulines Avenue to through traffic from 7 a.m. Thursday through 7 a.m. Monday on a weekly basis. Sanitation and emergency response vehicles will continue to have access along the block as needed.

"I am excited by our innovative collaboration with our community partners to quickly and intentionally reimagine our public spaces to safely fuel our economic recovery, in one of the world's most historic neighborhoods. The French Market Place demonstration will provide New Orleanians an opportunity to experience one of several concepts introduced to residents earlier this year as part of the Reimagining the French Quarter initiative, which is engaging residents and businesses on ways to promote a more person-centric French Quarter and reduce the impacts of motor vehicles," said Mayor LaToya Cantrell.

When closed to through traffic, the French Market Corporation will repurpose the street space as expanded seating areas for patrons to be able to enjoy the French Market while maintaining safe distancing under the City’s COVID-19 public health guidelines. Other elements of the demonstration will include new public art organized by partners at the Arts Council New Orleans.

StayLocal and adjacent businesses along French Market Place are also partnering to participate in the City’s Pilot Parklet Program and expect to have a pair of parklets permitted and installed within a few weeks. These parklets will provide business owners considering participation in the City’s Parklet Pilot Program an opportunity to see parklets in person.

"I've long supported the idea of reducing traffic and making the French Quarter more pedestrian-friendly. Now more than ever, we have an opportunity to be creative and to think outside the box to help our businesses recover from the COVID-19 pandemic. I'm glad that we have an administration committed to prioritizing pedestrians and businesses in an effective and low-cost way to rejuvenate the French Quarter while promoting the benefits of pedestrianization across our city," said District C Councilmember Kristin Gisleson Palmer.

“We’re thrilled to collaborate with the City to produce this demonstration on French Market Place,” said French Market Corporation Board President Anna Tusa. “Within the French Market Place footprint locals and visitors alike will be able to experience the historic open-air French Market eateries and vendors in a safe and social environment.”

On Monday, Nov. 16, the City will host a virtual design charrette for the full French Market Place concept, which proposes a full closure of through traffic on the full 2-blocks of French Market Place. The charrette will present a refined concept plan and provide New Orleanians another opportunity to provide feedback

SONIC REMEDIES
On Nov. 6th we begin a multi-weekend series showcasing local musicians sharing new work developed over the time-out of quarantine

Health and Safety is our number one priority

New Orleans Airlift
1031 Piety St
New Orleans, LA 70117

When Airlift began reaching out to musicians about performing their own work in the Music Box Village this fall a theme began to emerge. Not only were beloved musicians like Louis Michot of Lost Bayou Ramblers ready to get back in front of live audiences - they were ready with new music. Like so many of us, the pandemic’s enforced period of hibernation and reflection found these musicians with time on their hands to explore different territory.

In our 13,000 sq ft outdoor site with Covid-19 protocols in place, we hope to put guests at ease as they hear Preservation Hall's Ben Jaffe put preservation to the side to explore electronic music with guests from the Hall and Beyond; or be thrilled by Black Magic Drumline's synchronized dance style as they bang it out over the unexpected beats of a house track; or listen to Meschyia Lake stretch far beyond the Hot Jazz for which she is well known. In the coming weeks guitarist and viral sensation Josh Starmark man and Bounce/Soul rapper & Sunday Gospelist Ha Sizzle gathers friends to reprise musical experiments they incubated in the Music Box Village this past summer.

While Airlift cannot mount our ambitious one-of-a-kind Music Box Village programming at this time, we can open our magical outdoor environment to local musicians and our community as a resource for healing and expression. We hope we see you there.
Register online now through Wednesday, November 4th!

Celebration in the Oaks to be a drive-through attraction in 2020
Celebration in the Oaks, City Park's annual holiday attraction featuring holiday light displays and more than a million lights hanging from the park's oak trees, will run from Nov. 26 through Jan. 3, 2021. To adapt to coronavirus, the park has made several changes, including that it will be a driving instead of walking experience.
Celebration in the Oaks used to be viewable by car, but the park changed it to pedestrian-only in 2004. The drive is 2.25 miles, and guests will not be allowed to get out of their cars to explore exhibits.
New exhibits include a salute to medical personnel. Displays from past years with a driving option will return, including "Monstro," the whale from Pinocchio and a 15-foot tall waving Santa Claus. Regular attractions include lighted dinosaur figures, a unicorn, a pirate ship in the lagoon, flamingos, a Who Dat tree, scenes of Jackson Square, a musical tribute and more.
Admission will be by timed ticketing, and a limited number of tickets will be available. Tickets for cars and SUVs range from $18.99 to $32.99 for up to eight guests in a vehicle. There also are options for limos and party busses. Hours of operation will be 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday.

WHY IS IT CALLED THE BEAVER MOON?
November’s full Moon was traditionally called the Beaver Moon by a number of Native Americans and colonial Americans. Many Native American groups used the monthly Moons and nature’s corresponding signs as a calendar to track the seasons.
Why the “Beaver” Moon? This is the time of year when beavers begin to take shelter in their lodges, having laid up sufficient stores of food for the long winter ahead. During the time of the fur trade in North America, it was also the season to trap beavers for their thick, winter-ready pelts.
