Nestled in the heart of our community, you will find a non-profit organization working to fill in the gaps in services in our community. Good Samaritan Mission has been quietly serving to enhance the spiritual, emotional and physical quality of life for those living in poverty in Montour County for over 25 years.
The Good Samaritan Mission was founded by Sandy O’Rourke who saw a need to serve economically disadvantaged adults and children in Montour County. The Good Samaritan Mission is the only faith-based organization providing free services to those in need in our community. Initially, services included a free clothing mission, crisis/financial assistance and a partnership with the Danville/Riverside Feed A Friend for an annual holiday giveaway.
Since its establishment in 1995, Good Samaritan has grown their programs to include a monthly hygiene products giveaway, youth bed program (they purchase a brand new bed for a child who is sleeping on a mattress or couch, etc.), weekend food bags for students in need in the Danville Area School District (Many Hands Helping Others), adult educational classes for adults wanting to break the cycle of poverty and go from welfare to working (Bridges out of Poverty/Getting Ahead). Due to their increase in programs they will be expanding their physical space as well.
All of the Good Samaritan program services are aimed toward Montour County residents except for the clothing mission, anyone from any county can get clothing. "We are not just a clothing store, we have many programs under the Good Samaritan umbrella. We are also a good referral source for clients to other agencies that may be of assistance."
The Good Samaritan Mission has received awards recognizing their service and efforts including AGAPE's Diamond Donor Award and 2015 Partner of the Year Award for their Many Hands Helping Others program.
Volunteers and the Good Samaritan Mission Board of Directors are crucial in making all the Good Samaritan services and programs possible. Not to mention, Good Samaritan's current Executive Director, Carin Wharton, who became the first paid employee of the Good Samaritan in 2019.
The Good Samaritan is ever present in our community and is an active member of the Danville Business Alliance and Columbia Montour Chamber of Commerce. Ms. Wharton serves on The the Danville/Riverside Ministerium, Bridges out of Poverty Coalition, Montour County Human Services Coalition, Revolving Car Loan Program Committee, and is a Leadership Central Penn Participant. Good Samaritan Mission also works very closely with the Gatehouse and AGAPE.
We are grateful to have an organization like Good Samaritan Mission offering such resources in our community. Thank you, Good Samaritan Mission, for all that you do! Your services are greatly appreciated all year-round, but especially during the difficult times many have been enduring as of late.

Old Forge Brewing Co. New Bottle Release
|
|
FLANDERS STYLE RED ALE
BOTTLE RELEASE
FRIDAY 10/30!
Old Forge Brewing Co. is pleased to announce a new bottle release from their Barrel Reserve Series...Flanders Style Red Ale! This beauty is aged in barrels on a mixed culture of Brettanomyces and Lactobacillus, which lends a tart and funky character to this brew. It displays a slightly sour profile, with fruity notes of cherry and deep malt flavors despite the light body and dry finish, and comes in around 5.5% alcohol by volume and finishes relatively clean for the style. They recommend serving slightly chilled at 45F - 50F.
These bottles are only available at the brewpub in Danville and the taproom in York, $12 per bottle, and since they only bottled about 20 cases, they won't last long. They are ready to enjoy immediately or they can be cellar aged for future enjoyment.

2020 Acquisition and Trail Grants Announced
Danville Borough received a trail grant in the amount of $98,600 for the Development of the North Branch Canal Trail. Work to include construction of approximately 1.10 miles of trail from Grand Street to East Market Street; rehabilitation of 2 parking areas; ADA access, landscaping, project sign and other related site improvements.
Land acquisition grants help local communities and non-profit land trusts buy land for public parks and open space to be enjoyed by all for generations to come. This year’s $17 million in grants will together help protect more than 13,000 acres across Pennsylvania.
Trail grants help support the planning, construction, and rehabilitation of both motorized and non-motorized trails. The announced grants total $7.6 million and will support the construction or rehabilitation of nearly 37 miles of trails.

Help the Friendship Fire Co.
Reach Its Ladder Truck Goal
|
|
The Friendship Fire Company was established in 1841 as the first fire company in Danville. They are one of four 100% volunteer fire departments in the Danville Borough.
Their current ladder truck, a 2001 Pierce with an 85-foot tower, has served our community well; however, it is in dire need of replacement due to current mandatory safety regulation changes, and expensive unforeseen repairs. Over the past year, the current ladder truck has responded to a total of 167 fire, motor vehicle, and mutual aid calls throughout a 25-mile radius.
In order to continue to protect our small community, which includes four nursing homes, an elementary school, a secondary school, a high school, small local businesses and Geisinger Medical Center, an investment for a new ladder truck has become an absolute must!
The total cost is expected to reach $1.3 million dollars! Over $500,000 has been raised to date. Your much needed and appreciated donations to help support their efforts will provide them the opportunity to continue functioning as a vital part of our small community. Thank you very much for your time, consideration, and support in helping them achieve their goal to keep us safe!
