Charlie's Boating Tip: Wax on, wax on, all year long
|
In this week's installment of Charlie's Boating Tips, Haven Harbour Managing Director Charlie Petosa lends insight on protecting a vessel's finish to help ensure year-round shine and to protect your boat for years to come.
If you are storing a boat with us this winter, you will receive your spring commissioning work order form tomorrow. I invite you to consider most services offered to ensure a great boating season ahead. There is one service matter which all too often gets pushed to the bottom of the budget – protecting your boat through a year-round waxing and polishing program.
Boats and yachts can have an exceptionally long lifespan, much longer than cars. Most cars are disposable these days. Boats have a much longer lifespan – if cared for properly. Think about this, how often do you wax your car? Probably every time you take it through a car wash. How does the shine on your boat compare to your vehicle?
Waxing a boat should not be an annual event if you want to protect your investment and ensure a lasting shine. Some boaters think that a coat of wax once a year will hold up against the elements. It will not! Waxing a boat should be done continually. My tip is to do "bow to stern" interior and exterior detailing at the beginning and end of each season, including full wax (or polish, or Awlcare depending on the actual finish of your boat). The end-of-season detail is more critical than the pre-season detail to prevent issues during winter storage. Hopefully, you requested that service last fall. If not, now is the time to catch up.
The protective process does not stop with the spring and fall detailing events. Wax should be applied throughout the boating season. This is easy on smaller boats as an entire vessel can be waxed in one day. Larger boats are harder to keep up with, so waxing a few areas after every wash is a nice way to break it up. For instance, a flybridge and brow can be done one week, the forward deck another, and so on. Fast forward a month, and the entire boat has been waxed. Then, it is time to start over with the flybridge and brow. Another approach is to care for the high exposure areas every other week and then do a full wax monthly.
The point is waxing, and polishing is an ongoing process to ensure your boat is protected. Be sure to request a complete interior and exterior detail with your spring commissioning work order. Then, work with one of our knowledgeable service managers on an appropriate cleaning and waxing program to ensure your boat looks great throughout the season and is protected for years to come.

WINTER BOATYARD CONDITIONS UPDATE
Temperatures have warmed this week to the low 50s following last weekend's light snow accumulations and sustained winds. Rain currently falling, and is expected to continue into tomorrow. The cold returns this weekend with highs in the 30s, but skies clear. Visit our Weather Station for local updates.
Note: While we do clear snow and ice away from common areas, we do not conduct snow removal around stored vessels, docks and bulkheads; of which are subject to frosting-up daily this time of year. If you are in to check on your boat, please do so with caution.
