North Platte serves up pancakes and more
The North Platte Kiwanis Club has several recent projects to report.
The club’s most recent activity was Pancake Day on March 5. The event was held at First United Methodist Church. About 400 people were served. In addition to club members, Key Club members volunteered as well and some of the young workers are pictured at the grill.
In February, a group of members set up the grill and cooked pancakes at Washington School. Members also helped Key Club at the concession stand at Adams Middle School.

The North Platte Key Club delivered valentines to Linden Court and Centennial in February and also made a donation to the Lincoln Connection. The SLP donated $1,500 that will go toward purchasing new washing machines and dryers at the facility. The Key Club raised the funds manning the concession stand/bake sale during a basketball game last month as well as donations by area businesses. West Des Moines club helps out with meal
Led by Club President Kathy Miller, a team of eight members and two spouses of West Des Moines Kiwanis Club met Feb. 23 at the Ronald McDonald House associated with Blank Children’s Hospital in Des Moines to prepare a dinner meal for the families staying at the RMH.
Des Moines is fortunate to have two Ronald McDonald Houses. The first is located near the Blank Children’s Hospital on the Downtown Unity Point Campus and has 17 guest rooms. The second located on the fourth floor of the MercyOne Hospital near downtown Des Moines has 18 guest rooms. All the meals are prepared at the Blank Children’s Hospital Ronald McDonald House. Food for the MercyOne RMH is then transported to MercyOne. Meal volunteers are instructed to prepare food for 60 guests, including adults and children.
Club member Dale Cremers and his wife, Judy, provided a recipe for spinach and sausage lasagna. The club added tossed salad and warm bread to the menu. The volunteers went to work and browned six pounds of sausage, chopped onions and garlic and sliced cheese and assembled the lasagna in five pans with sauce and smothered it in two kinds of cheese. With the pans in the ovens, clean-up of the kitchen got underway – which didn’t take too long with all the available person-power. Everything was done and ready to go by 6 p.m. as requested.
In addition to the club providing the meal ingredients, club members also donated many household items including soaps, toothpaste, cleaning supplies computer print paper, etc. for use at the RMH. The live-in house manager related a few stories regarding the construction of the facility and the families that have or are using it and the comfort it provides during what is a trying time for the guests.
This being the first time the club has done this project the group’s assessment was that it was fun and relatively easy to do. They are confident they'll do it more times in the future.
