December 2019
Stacey Brown & Associates Counseling and Wellness
There's so much to be happy about in Southwest Florida this time of year! The glorious weather, seasonal decorations, the generosity of our community and the spirit of the holidays combine to create such a joyful energy.

Remember to be gentle with yourself as the challenges of schedules, holiday planning and family time may trigger old behavioral patterns, memories and conversations. Take a look at Valarie's self care tips for holiday stress management in the article below.

Massage is a wonderful gift to yourself. And, you may also give the gift of massage to others. Christar is offering some new services; gift certificates are available on our website right here:

This month, we have a unique situation in that we are wrapping up the decade at the end of December, right after the Winter Solstice, Christmas and a solar eclipse. This is a perfect time to pause, turn inward and reflect on our growth, challenges and lessons from the past ten years. Letting go of things that no longer serve us will allow us to have space for new behaviors, attitudes and experiences. With the new year, set intentions to manifest your new decade, set goals and continue to grow.

Regardless of how you celebrate this month, honor your religions, your spiritual practice, your family, your community and yourself with old and new traditions. Honor your spirit of joy and celebrate your inner beauty and internal wisdom.

Namaste and Happy New Year!

Stress Management for the Holidays and Beyond
Tips from the Wisdom Traditions of Yoga, Ayurveda and
Western Psychology
by Valarie Olsen, MA, LMHC, RYT
We are busy all year round, then add the holiday commitments and festivities and this can be a recipe for stress. Here are some tips with ideas for when you have a little time to engage in self-care, a little more time and then bigger blocks of time. Make a promise to yourself to try something each day!

If you have 3-5 minutes:
Take 3-5 minutes to focus on your breath by following
your inhale/exhale...
Meditate for 3-5 minutes at a time of day that works for you
Take a break in your day to stretch and move for 3-5 minutes
Do tongue scraping in the morning upon rising
Sip on warm lemon water in the morning while getting ready
for work and tending to the kids
Set an intention for your day
Read an inspirational quote

If you have 15-30 minutes:
Do a short yoga sequence such as a round of sun salutations
Meditate for 15 minutes
Take a short walk
Eat a healthy meal
Watch the sunrise or sunset with a cup of tea
Read a chapter from a favorite book
Practice Yoga Nidra
Journaling

If you have an hour:
Take a yoga class
Abhyanga (dry brushing and oil massage)
Get a massage
Prepare and enjoy a home cooked meal
Take a nap or rest
Take a longer walk
Spend time in nature

Meditation for Busy Minds
Have you been curious about meditation but haven't tried? Have you tried meditation but gave up because you "can't sit still" or "can't quiet my mind"? If so, this workshop series is for you.

Join Stacey Brown, MA, LMHC, NCC for this four week training.
During this workshop, you will learn what meditation really is and you will learn a simple, specific method for learning how to meditate. After practicing at home, return for discussion, coaching and reflection.

This group meditation gathering will provide a powerful experience to help you get started and gain the confidence to continue. You will learn how to establish a daily, personal meditation practice to help you learn more about yourself, to focus your mind and steady your breath so you will be able to be more resilient when facing everyday stress.

*Pre-registration is required.
*Bring a meditation cushion to sit on if you like. Chairs will be provided.
*Bring a scarf or a sweater, as the room may be chilly.
