Reflections with Fr. Mark
|
|
I rarely watch local news (unless there is a disaster or police chase) because it is mostly filled with sappy news of Hollywood relationships, the rich and famous, politicians not doing their job and ordinary people in their moments of suffering. For me, that is all “fake news.” The broadcast news and television shows like it never challenge me to be different or to move into a new direction. Rather, it is just depressing. So, I choose NOT to view it daily. Read more...

2020 End of Year Financial Statements
A Message to Our Generous Parishioners~ St. Luke Parish will be sending End of Year Financial Statements only to parishioners who request a statement. We implemented this process last year, rather than send statements automatically, due to the recent changes in the tax laws regarding itemized deductions.
Many area parishes have also adopted this process to be good stewards of our resources and funds by reducing printing and postage costs. Please contact the Pastoral Office at (626) 291-5900 or e-mail Kerrin at kerrin@stluketemplecity.org to request a statement of your 2020 parish donations. Thank you again for your generosity and support.

St. Luke Conference Society of St. Vincent de Paul Report
St. Luke Conference Society of St. Vincent de Paul completed nine years of service at the end of September 2020. It presently has 15 Active members and 9 Associate members. Active members attend meetings twice a month, which are currently conducted by phone. Associate members help with the packaging and distribution of food which was discontinued during the imposition of the lock down.
Our Service during our fiscal year from October to September 2020 accounted for:
(1) Rental assistance and motel stays to 16 families (41 individuals).
(2) Assistance for utilities, vehicle repairs, and apartment applications to 5 families.
(3) From food drives by schools and other community organizations and donations from parishioners, we collected approximately $17,000 worth of non-perishable food goods. Supplemented by donated funds and assistance from the L.A. Regional Food Bank, between October 2019 and February 2020, we distributed food valued at $33,000 to over 75 family units each month. Due to the lock down, service has been temporarily discontinued.
(4) We distributed grocery gift cards to close to 60 families each month from May to September.
(5) Our members made 30 home visits, 2 hospital visits, 7 eldercare visits and made 62 assistance visits to members of the local homeless community.

Intercessory Prayer Ministry Welcomes Prayer Requests & Members
The Intercessory Prayer Ministry invites members to pray for those in need. The ministry receives any requests for those needs that require prayer for days, weeks or months. Prayer requests might be related to recovery from or living with cancer, other diseases and sicknesses; recovery from surgery; high-risk pregnancies; or addictions, etc.
Members commit to praying each day for these needs - whatever time fits your schedule. The only requirement is that you have an e-mail address, as all prayer requests will be sent that way once or twice a week. To join or request a prayer, e-mail Angelica at 44angelicafe@gmail.com.

'Drive-thru' Confessions
'Drive-thru' Confessions are offered at 1:00 pm on Saturdays. Please wear a mask and drive through the church parking lot where you will be directed through the back alley to approach one of the priests who will hear your brief confession from outside the passenger side of the car.
If there are multiple people in the car, the passenger/s may exit and stand at a safe distance and we will come to them after hearing the driver’s confession. This is not a prolonged counseling moment: we want anybody who wants a brief confession following these months of lockdown to have the opportunity, so please be prepared and expedient. Please drive out safely through the rear gate onto Live Oak Avenue.

Food Assistance Available for Parishioners in Need
Our St. Luke Society of St. Vincent de Paul Conference wants our parishioners to know that food is available in our St. Luke Food Pantry if you are in need because of your inability to access food during the Covid-19 crisis.
We are very grateful for the food that our generous parishioners have previously donated and though our Pantry Share Days have been temporarily halted, we can still make the food available for our parish family. All our food is shelf stable and does not include fresh produce or foods that require refrigeration.
Please call (626) 684-2914 and one of our SVdP members will make arrangements to deliver or have you safely pick up the food at the Pantry. We continue to pray for all of our generous parishioners and we look forward to the time when we can reopen our doors for our normal distribution.
In keeping with our Vincentian mission to assist those in need in our local community, our conference continues to provide financial assistance for rent, utilities, food and household items during the Covid-19 crisis.

9 Days for Life Novena
Thursday, January 21 – Friday, January 29, 2021
Join thousands of Catholics praying for LIFE January 21-29. God is calling YOU to restore a culture that protects the dignity of life from conception to natural death. Pray the 9 Days for Life Novena for the protection of human life. Each day’s intention is accompanied by a short reflection and suggested actions to help build a culture of life.
For the Novena, pray one Our Father, 3 Hail Mary’s and one Glory Be each day, and the daily intentions and reflections listed below.
Visit www.9daysforlife.com to subscribe and have the daily intentions and reflections sent to your e-mail.
Another resource for Respect Life information is the USCCB Respect Life Program. USCCB Respect Life serves the U.S. Bishops' goal of building a culture of life "from womb to tomb." They help local Respect Life ministries, as well as individual Catholics, to live and share Christ's Gospel of Life. Their website includes pro-life prayers and devotions; facts about abortion, euthanasia, and bioethics; resources for supporting local ministries; Action Alerts to raise your voice politically; and practical help with sharing the truth about dignity and value of every human person.
The annual Respect Life Program is a year-round, nationwide effort to help Catholics understand, value, and become engaged with building a culture that cherishes every human life.
Although sponsored by the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, the Respect Life Program is essentially comprised of the efforts of leaders throughout the Church—parish priests, staff, and volunteers; teachers and school administrators; diocesan leaders; and so many others.
The U.S. bishops produce these materials to assist you in your efforts. Instead of acting as stand-alone resources, they are designed to be brought to life as tools in your hands—build off or adapt them to fit your specific needs!
