Is there much to a person's name? Why did someone receive the name that they were given? And then also, why do we sometimes seem have greater honor with particular names? I would venture to say that there is a lot to a person's name and here's why.
If we take a moment to reflect on this, a person's name is something that holds great importance as parents are typically careful and picky about the name they give their child, so much so that the name is typically not one that has been tarnished or has a negative association by others in history (ex: Judas, Adolf, etc.).
Today, September 12th, we celebrate and honor a woman with a beautiful name: Mary (Miryam/Maria/Marie). Just this past Tuesday we celebrated our Mother Mary's birthday (September 8th), and today we celebrate her name! This blessed woman who continues to bless us as we seek her intercessions whenever we call upon her name, "O Maria!"
As we honor our blessed Mother, may we also keep in mind the importance of a name and give it honor, and not curse. We are our own person, called to imitate the excellence and virtues of those we may have been named after/for. For just in the same way we are called Christians, Disciples of Christ, may we reflect Jesus by the way we live our life.
Mary, our Blessed Mother, pray for us!
