NO STORM IS TOO BIG TO KEEP MILLET IN BLOOM DOWN,
EVEN WHEN IT’S THE STORM OF THE DECADE.

Millet in Bloom team members and town residents cleaning up
fallen leaves and branches after the storm.
|
|
On the night of July 16, 2020, a storm swept through Millet with straight line wind speeds of up to 120 km/h. The storm uprooted an estimated quarter of the town’s mature trees and ripped branches off of many more. 45th Avenue (Highway 616) showed some of the most visible damage, as two-thirds of the mature trembling aspens were felled along the boulevard, burying the garden beds in branches and leaves. In the Millet Community Cemetery, a fallen pine tree knocked over several gravestones on the east side of the site.

Property damage included damage to private houses, fences, and vehicles, as well as lost shingles on the School Bell Kiosk, broken signs at the Millet Agriplex, collapsed baseball dugouts, and the roof torn off of the town’s water reservoir building. Uprooted trees off of Range Road 242 caused a gas leak, leading to the evacuation of several homes in the neighbourhood. Other areas of town experienced power outages, some for several days. |

Millet and District Museum staff were among those who spent their Friday helping with the cleanup, clearing fallen branches at the School Bell Kiosk Garden. In addition to non-stop efforts from the Town of Millet cleanup crews and staff, crews were sent from the nearby cities of Leduc and Wetaskiwin, as well as forty crews from FortisAlberta and crews from ATCO Gas.
Whirring chainsaws could be heard around town for days as residents worked to clear the tree damage. As rain had made the Town Lagoon site road too soft to drive on,

The branches at the Millet Agriplex have
been turned into free mulch for gardeners.
|
|
|
the Agriplex parking lot was transformed into a dropoff site for residents and piled high with fallen trees and branches. Despite the extensive damage throughout town, we are extremely fortunate the vast majority of our community gardens and homes escaped serious harm.
Millet in Bloom would like to extend our sincerest thanks to everyone who participated in the cleanup efforts.

The hard work and civic pride of our Millet residents and our neighbouring communities has put Millet back on track. We are excited to show off our gardens in this year’s national Communities in Bloom competition. Even when the unexpected happens, we have been able to weather the storm, pulling through to the other side through the teamwork and dedication of our community. |

Many of you will recognize Margaret Stinson, who created and coordinated CiB merchandise sales for Canada for over 9 years, along with her late husband Ivan. Margaret was a judge for the national and international Communities in Bloom program, and honorary host with late husband Ivan for Communities in Bloom National Awards (2 years).
Margaret is a current Director with the Green Cities Foundation, and has been involved in the coordination of many events including National Tree day, Canada Garden Day, Local heritage festival, local Canada 125 community celebrations and much more. Margaret currently resides in Guelph, ON at Stone Lodge Retirement Home, as an ambassador welcoming and assisting new residents, and gives group presentations at Stone Lodge on various topics of interest.
Margaret has received a number of awards for her outstanding volunteer efforts:
- The Central Nova Scotia Tourism Award for Outstanding Service to the Tourism Industry.
- Tourism Industry Association of Nova Scotia (TIANS) Crystal Award for the volunteer work in the beautification of the Province.
- Along with her late husband received The Legacy Award (2014) from Landscape Ontario for a lifetime of volunteerism in the horticulture industry.
- The Governor General’s Caring Canadian Award (2015) The Sovereign’s Medal (2016)
- The YMCA -YWCA Women of Distinction (2016)
- The Ontario Senior Award (2017) for contribution to your community
We appreciate all Margaret has done for our communities and thank her for being a wonderful volunteer ambassador!
