Update on the Coronavirus
|
|
The decision has been made to make a change to the end of the school year. The original last day for pre-K-11 students was May 21. The new last day of instruction for pre-K through 11th grade is May 15. Students will have the entire following week to make-up any assignments or complete any work assigned through May 15. All assignments and work must be completed by May 21.
The last day of instruction for Seniors is May 8. Students will have the following week to make up any assignments or complete work assigned through May 15. All assignments and work must be completed by May 15.
We will be holding a district-wide material pickup and textbook drop off on May 20. More information on times and the process will be communicated soon.
Governor Mike DeWine ordered extended closure through the remainder of 2019-2020 school year.
- Campus remains closed
- All District events are canceled through the remainder of the 2019-2020 school year.
- During this time, access to all facilities, including athletic fields, will be restricted for staff, students, parents, and community members.
- Only essential operational staff members will be allowed to access our facilities to continue to provide food and services to our students who need those resources.

The
FREE
Feeding program will continue every Monday through May 18. This program is for all children 18 and under, not just for those on free or reduced meals. Each student will receive 5 breakfasts and 5 lunches at NO COST to the parent.
There are two locations available for food pickup; Joshua's Place or Columbia Intermediate School. Both locations will hold pickup from 12:00 - 1:00 p.m.

Today was the last day of regular instruction for our Kings High School Seniors. The end of the school year for them certainly didn't end the way any of us would have wanted for them. Due to social distancing orders, there will be no in-person graduation this year.
The KHS Class of 2020 will be celebrated in a one-hour, commercial free graduation special on Local 12 affiliate, CW Cincinnati on May 31 at 3:00 p.m.

CIS Raises More Money - Another Well Drilled
|
|
Congratulations to the 6th graders at Columbia Intermediate School! They raised over $2,000 this year for Water for South Sudan (WFSS) making a grand total of $44,254.01 donated from CIS over the years.
This week, they received news from WFSS that a 4th well has been drilled on behalf of CIS!
The fundraiser is inspired by the book, "A Long Walk to Water" by Linda Park. The story is about Salva Dut, who at age 11 fled Sudan in the midst of a civil war. As a teenager, he led 1,500 other “lost boys” through the Southern Sudan desert to a refugee camp in Kenya. His true story is interwoven in the book with that of a fictional character named Nya, who walks miles each day to get water for her family.
The book is read as part of a "social injustice" unit and a theme focused on social responsibility. After reading the book, the 6th grade students worked together to raise funds for WFSS, including their Walk for Water fundraiser in the Fall of 2019 where students walked around the school with a gallon of water.
This latest well drilled and sponsored by CIS is in Aringhok Primary School in Ajogo County, Grogrial State, South Sudan. If you copy and paste 8.75550141 28.56311892 into a browser and hit enter, you can view the location of the well on a map.
WFSS Executive Director, Lynn Malooly said, "Thank you for your generosity, which is now providing clean water--and a new future--to the people in Aringhok Primary School, South Sudan."
Water for South Sudan has drilled 452 wells since 2005, all from donor support.

May is Mental Health Month

A Mental Health Update from Kings Social & Emotional Health Coordinator, Kim Sellers
Each year millions of Americans face the reality of living with a mental illness. May is Mental Health Awareness Month and every year the goal is to fight stigma, provide support, educate the public, and advocate for policies that support people with
mental illness
and their families. This year, more than ever in light of the COVID-19 pandemic, we need to focus on mental wellness. Each week, we are highlighting one of Mental Health America’s #Tools2Thrive, so be on the lookout for those.
COVID-19 is the “perfect storm” for stress to negatively impact children’s mental and physical health and behavior. The absence of routines, social interaction, parent’s job losses or serious illness or loss of someone they child cares about can leave children feeling traumatized.
There are a few things we can do right now including:
- Watch your children closely to look for signs of stress or changes in behavior (behavioral outbursts, major temper tantrums, bedwetting, and regression, etc.).
- Find the “stress busters” that work for your family. Focus on sleep, exercise/movement, and nutrition. Parents can help their children stay connected with friends and family through video chat, phone calls, and letters.
- Stick to a routine! Kids need structure that includes hygiene, physical activity, and play.

KJH eCybermission Winners
|
|
The 7th grade students on Team 7 Red at Kings Junior High School were presented with a STEM challenge by their Science teacher, Vonda Fruhwirth. She challenged them to take part in the eCYBERMISSION Competition, a web-based science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) competition. Students were challenged to explore how STEM works in their world while working as a team to solve problems in their community and submit their findings online.
This year we have two teams that earned 1st and 2nd place in the State, and National Finalist.

wanted to attack the global problem of “ghost nets,” abandoned or lost fishing nets, causing death and destruction to ecosystems by endlessly trapping and killing marine life.
They used biodegradable materials: bamboo, hemp cord, hemp rope, silk yarn and sisal rope to construct a weighted, multi-monofilament gill net called, “The Ghostbuster.” The prototype floated, absorbed, and repeatedly functioned over time without bio-degradation during the short testing period. The team would like to do further testing on durability and the amount of weight the gill net can safely hold.

wanted to find an inexpensive way to clean water that can be made out of materials in a home.
They created a cheap, easy filter that included charcoal, to get rid of bad odor, taste, lead amounts, and pesticides. The filtered water looked clearer, but further testing is needed to check for microscopic materials. They would also like to run more tests using lead due to the contamination in Flint, MI.
Mrs. Fruwirth, said, "Each year I am truly inspired by the creativity and enthusiasm that students bring to this competition."

who came in FIRST in the State in Computer Animation Team at the All-State Leadership Conference for Business Professionals of America.
In it's first ever virtual conference April 20-24, Caleb and Adam joined more than 900 conference delegates from across Ohio to compete in state level business skills competitions.
The State Leadership Conference (SLC) is the most anticipated event of the Ohio BPA
year. The goal of the Workplace Skills Assessment Program is to provide student members the opportunity to demonstrate workplace skills achieved in their career-technical programs.

Summer Athletic Camps - CANCELED
|
|
With the recent order from the Ohio Department of Health regarding the extended closure of school facilities through June 30th, we have made the difficult decision to cancel all Kings Athletic Youth Summer Camps for the 2020 season.
This is a decision we did not take lightly as we know how important our youth camps are for our community and each of our programs. Our summer camps are some of our favorite events of the year as we get to see young Knights enjoy learning their favorite sports from our high school coaches, athletes, and get to see the future of our programs!!
With the recent direction from the Ohio Department of Health regarding school facility closures among other factors, we felt this was the best decision for our camps this year. We are very disappointed we will not be able to see all of our future Knights at their favorite sport camps. Their health and safety, however, will always be our highest priority.
Our coaching staff and department are working on alternative plans to provide virtual skill instruction to our future Knights! Stay tuned for more information coming from our programs and department.
