DIRECTOR'S CUP
Cheery Friday Greetings,
During this time of worrisome political unrest, terrorism at the Capitol, rising Covid positives and deaths, and layoffs or reductions among our region’s libraries and cultural organizations, we can experience stress on so many levels. I wish you peace, health, and the ability to find hope and joy despite everything that is swirling around us. There will be better days ahead!
There are a few reasons for a bit of hope and optimism in our libraries and organizations. The PPP2 loans are open for small organizations. The president-elect has announced a Covid relief package that will help states and individuals financially, as well as with Covid vaccinations. Health experts (not politicians) are suggesting that Covid cases may peak in January and then gradually decline, primarily due to vaccinations and more people socially distancing.
What federal relief means for Library Aid remains unclear. All programs were cut upwards of 20-23% for the current year, from Coordinated Collection Development Aid for Academics to library system budgets. Will we see a reinstatement? I do not know.
We do need to make a concerted effort to advocate for restoration of library aid for the next year. Please circle Friday, February 26 on your calendar—it is the New York Library Association’s Library Advocacy Day. It is virtual this year, so hopefully many of you can attend. Although we will not be running from building to building and office to office, we will need to carefully orchestrate our virtual visits. There will be more information released in the weeks ahead to help us design our meetings. Stay tuned!
On Monday, we honor Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. I was reminded at today’s Diversity Consortium of Tompkins County that while dialogue surrounding diversity, equity, inclusion, and racial and social justice is useful, it is also important to take action. Due to political unrest and Covid, people may not feel comfortable attending rallies, but there are other ways to support Dr. King’s racial justice efforts. We can volunteer in a way that directly supports the BIPOC community. We can attend a local service or virtual program talk. We can donate to organizations working for racial justice, locally if possible, or regionally/nationally. Some community organizations may have virtual breakfasts or take-out food that supports these efforts. I would love to hear how you or your library or cultural organization is observing Dr. King, Jr.'s birthday.
Yours in partnership,
Mary-Carol Lindbloom
Executive Director
