From the Desk of the Executive Director
It’s still dry out there and we remain concerned around MFGA. MFGA chair Larry Wegner said the rains from last week seem a distant memory in his Virden area. Larry keeps close tabs on the conditions and the markets and he’s not too comfortable these days on activity on either front. MFGA is meeting regularly with the Manitoba Minister of Agriculture Resource Development Blaine Pedersen, Deputy Minister Dori Gingera-Beauchemin, senior provincial government officials and the executive from Manitoba Beef Producers (MBP) around the ongoing dry conditions and how we can accelerate updates, information and promote programs to producers. We are very grateful to be at the table and to be part of such important discussions. More information is listed below.

I’d also like to pass along our very sincere MFGA thanks – MERCI! - to The Honourable Marie-Claude Bibeau, Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada for $1.1M in AAFC AgriRisk funding for an exciting MFGA project that will provide a new online forecasting tool to help Manitoba farmers better manage extreme weather events. As well, our very sincere thanks to the Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Environment and Climate Change (Canada Water Agency) Terry Duguid, for emceeing the announcement on June 15, 2021. As a Winnipeg MP, we have seen the passion and commitment from MP Duguid around water as exemplified in the Lake Winnipeg efforts he has led and been part of. This forecasting tool will be valuable across the Assiniboine River Basin on key water management fronts and we look forward to supporting producers and ensuring they have the best opportunity to use the MFGA tool once it’s completed by March 2023.

As well, many people had a very important role in the Growing Forward–funded MFGA Phase 1 project that wrapped up in 2018 and was needed to successfully build this super exciting Phase 2. The MFGA Aquanty Model Phase 1 is fully operational and is being used to regularly run scenarios in key agricultural settings and places like Oak River and Whitewater Lake. The combination of the two projects gives MFGA and our partners a very powerful tool to look at numerous levels of water movement across some of the world’s most productive agricultural lands and the role and benefits of forages, grasslands and wetlands in water and land management.

Special thank you to Phase 1 funding partners at AAFC AgriRisk Initiatives and the Province of Manitoba, contributors and leaders whose work helped Phase 2 happen including three MFGA boards led by chairs: Jim Lintott, Dave Koslowsky and Darren Chapman; the MFGA Aquanty Phase 1 leadership team of Henry Nelson, Allan Preston (ARBI), Wanda McFadyen (ARBI) and Chris Yuzdepski, a supporting team of excellent project advisory members from groups like MBP, Assiniboine West Watershed District, Manitoba Agriculture, Manitoba Sustainable Development, Manitoba Infrastructure, Assiniboine Community College, Brandon University, ISM and KAP, and of course, Aquanty, led by Dr. Steven Frey and the hydrogeosphere modelling team out of Waterloo.

And last but never the least, our constant appreciation and thanks to all our corporate supporters whose support allows us to do our very best work. We all are completely mindful of your support and we appreciate it and thank you very much.

Muchos Grasses All,
Duncan Morrison, MFGA Executive Director

2021 MFGA Green Gold Program Highlights
The weather conditions this spring were cool, dry conditions until favorable rainfalls within a significant heat wave came near the end of the program. This year, the program included 23 registered fields from Central, Eastern, Interlake, and Western Manitoba. Alfalfa sampling began on May 27 (starting height of 10 inches) and by end of testing on June 16, the bulk of the fields were in the early-bloom stage, ranging 10 to 25 inches.
MFGA June 23 Hay & Pasture Report
The first two weeks of June saw significant rainfall amounts across most of the province. This much needed moisture helped improve hay and pasture fields however fields continue to show the effects of lack of moisture with forage yields reported in the 50 to 70 per cent normal range and pastures requiring additional moisture to continue supporting summer grazing. Forage quality considerations
Manitoba Forage and Grassland Association’s Green Gold Program looks at the optimum time to harvest alfalfa for first cut – an important process because the difference between good quality and lower quality alfalfa is timing. Stage of growth at harvest is crucial when you are targeting various groups of cattle for that first cut. When feeding dairy cows in early lactation you may be targeting the early bud stage, but if you are feeding mature beef cows then mid to late flowering may better suit your needs. Read on...
Resources for producers affected by dry conditions
As a result of challenging weather and growing seasons that producers have faced over recent years, MFGA launched a Hay Relief page that includes information on hay listings, drought related resources, and available assistance including these recent announcements from the governments of Canada and Manitoba.
Manitoba Agriculture and Resource Development (MARD) advises that livestock producers will temporarily be allowed to cut hay on Crown lands not normally designated for agricultural use.
The governments of Canada and Manitoba are advising that livestock producers who have been affected by dry conditions on pasture in Manitoba can apply for funding to support water source development under Ag Action Manitoba. Funding is provided through the Managing Livestock Access to Riparian Areas beneficial management practice (BMP) under Ag Action Manitoba – Assurance. Application deadline is September 1. Eligible items include: water source development – constructing new or rehabilitating existing wells or dugouts; solar, wind or grid-powered alternative watering systems; permanent fencing to restrict livestock access to surface water and dugouts; and permanent pipeline development.
