Nominate Students to Compete in the Pandemic 2.0 Simulation Game by January 21, 2021

The nomination phase for the annual NASPAA-Batten Student Simulation Competition is now open. The competition will be held in an all virtual format. Competition dates will be organized by time zone. Different schools are sponsoring the NASPAA-Batten Simulation Competition on different dates.

  •    February 20, 2021: Middle East/Africa/ Europe Time Zone
  •    February 27, 2021: North/Central/South America Time Zone
  •    March 6, 2021: Asia Time Zone

Pandemic 2.0 is timely, presenting the opportunity to control the outbreak, using updated tools, including vaccine distribution issues. It is a sequel to the 2018 simulation, in which students had to decide which policies to implement in order to stop the pandemic. The simulation is built by the University of Virginia Center for Leadership Simulation and Gaming.

THE NOMINATION PROCESS

Deans/Program Directors/PAA Advisors/Faculty can nominate up to five students to compete. They have until January 21, 2021 to complete the process.

This year, there is a small fee to compete — $20 USD per student — which will be assessed on the student nomination page. If that fee would be a hardship for your program, please advise and email us at info@nbsims.org.

Competition teams will be made up of five students, comprised of students from different schools.

Past Competitors: please encourage your programs to nominate students as soon as possible. Recent Grads: We have opened the competition to MPA/MPP students who have graduated from their programs within the last five years! Past competitors who are not nominated by faculty have the opportunity to self-register for the competition beginning January 20. The enrollment fee will be $20.

PLEASE COMMENT!: The NASPAA Diversity Equity Inclusion Task Force Report

In the December issue of this newsletter, NASPAA President Laura Bloomberg presented the final report of the ad hoc NASPAA Task Force on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. She invited comments from all members of the NASPAA community. The deadline for providing your comments to the Executive Council has been extended, slightly, until January 18. As the President noted, the Executive Council has officially taken receipt of the final report and is now turning to the work of prioritizing concrete action steps, and taking the immediate next steps:

1. The open comment period for all NASPAA members to review the report and offer feedback, recommendations or implementation ideas in the comment form. The deadline is January 18.

2. A “deep dive” review and discussion with NASPAA staff and committee chairs.

3. Review and decision on recommendation to adopt key definitions. The Report proposes and recommends adoption of definitions for four key terms that are used throughout NASPAA’s standards, accreditation guidance and other organizational documents: Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Cultural Competence. We have created a side-by-side document (see below) that includes current NASPAA definitions or descriptions for these terms and the recommended definitions.

4. Agreement on near term priority actions in three critical areas: training, support for minority serving institutions, and data collection/assessment.

5. Ensuring staffing support for NASPAA’s DEI goals and priorities

Please help NASPAA prioritize our mission, live our values and embrace efforts to make us an ever more just and equitable organization—by commenting on the report.

Statement from the NASPAA Executive Committee
Regarding the US Capitol Incursion

January 8, 2021

NASPAA’s 328 member Schools of public administration and policy prepare their graduates to lead and maintain public services for the people. In the United States, public services are governed by the American Constitution and the rule of law. When the President of these United States undercuts the foundation of democratic society and incites insurrection against the Congress and the United States Capitol, home to our most foundational deliberative processes, it strikes at the heart of our democracy. These actions threaten every public servant’s ability to do their job and serve the people. NASPAA condemns President Donald J. Trump's actions, condemns the actions of the insurrectionist mobs who acted at his behest, and commits in 2021 to the work of re-instilling a commitment to public service and pursuit of the common good. The public affairs schools of the United States, grounded as they are in a shared commitment to the US Constitution and democratic governance, are ready for the challenge.

FGV School of Public Policy and Government

The Master Program in Public Policy and Government (MPPG) of the FGV School of Public Policy and Government (FGV EPPG) aims at training high-quality professionals and leaders in public service. FGV EPPG is located in Brasília, the federal capital of Brazil. We expect students to develop original research and contribute to the design, development, monitoring, and evaluation of public policies. The MPPG also prepares students to participate in the discussion of innovative and transformative needs of the government to deliver quality services to citizens and protect and expand public goods everywhere. The program currently has about fifty students and is expected to have around one hundred students in the coming years. Our goal in joining NASPAA is to participate in a network of high-quality universities that share the purpose of excellence in teaching and research. EPPG wants to join other institutions committed to providing an education that helps improve public service in all its dimensions. We hope to build strong and lasting partnerships with NASPAA members developing joint projects at the forefront of knowledge and contributing towards making the society a better place to live in.
