Christmas Parade & Festival Just Around the Corner!
It's almost the most wonderful time of the year! The Second Annual Cumming Christmas Parade & Festival will be held on Saturday, Dec. 7, from 5-8 p.m.

If you haven't yet registered your group, organization, business, church, individual vehicle, etc. for the parade, don't worry - there's still time! We have extended the registration deadline to 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 3. Just click here for the registration form, fill it out, and return it to cledford@cityofcumming.net.

The parade route runs from Forsyth Central High School, through downtown Cumming, to the Cumming Fairgrounds via Tribble Gap/Castleberry Road. After the parade, be sure to head down to the Fairgrounds for a Christmas Festival featuring photos with Santa, live music presented by Mountain Lake Church, hayrides through the Fairgrounds' Christmas light displays, a tree lighting presentation at 7:30 p.m., vendors, and more!

We're also excited to announce that we have partnered with The Place of Forsyth Holiday House to collect new, unwrapped toys for kids ages infant to 18 years during the Fairgrounds' Christmas Festival. Just bring your donations to the Fairgrounds and place them in the designated collection boxes during the festival. All donations will go to local children in need.

Welcome Councilman-Elect Joey Cochran
This January, the Cumming City Council will have a new member. Local business owner Joey Cochran (pictured at right) was elected on Nov. 5 to Council Post 3, currently held by long-time Councilman Lewis Ledbetter.

Councilman Ledbetter chose to retire at the end of this year, which will mark his 49th year serving on the Council. We thank Councilman Ledbetter for his many years of service to the community!

Councilman-elect Cochran will begin his four-year term on Jan. 1, 2019. Council members Linda Ledbetter and Christopher Light will both begin their second 4-year term on the Council in January after facing no opposition during the November election.
Aquatic Center Director Honored

Congratulations to Carla Wilson, Director of the Cumming Aquatic Center, for recently being recognized by the Georgia Recreation & Park Association (GRPA).

Carla received the Distinguished Professional Award in Athletics/Aquatics, which recognizes individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the field of recreation, parks, and leisure services within the Athletics/Aquatics Network. It is the highest award presented by the network.

She also received a Presidential Citation in honor of her work as co-chair of the GRPA Annual Conference Committee. This award is presented by the President of GRPA and is based on professionalism, dedication, passion, and ability to achieve the objectives of the President.

Congratulations, Carla, from all your friends at the City of Cumming!
Homes Built 1982-88 Needed for EPA Water Sampling
Are you a Cumming Utilities water customer? Was your home built between 1982 and 1988? If you answered yes to both these questions, Cumming Utilities needs your help!

As part of new regulations from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), public utilities are now required to collect water samples from homes built during the time period from 1982 and 1988 to test for lead and copper. Homes from this time period were chosen for the sampling due to a type of lead solder that was often used on copper pipes during this era. This solder may have a tendency to leach lead into water, especially after long periods of standing in pipes.

If you are the owner of a home built during this time period and are a Cumming Utilities water customer, please contact Tom Bryson at tombryson@cityofcumming.net or 770-781-2026 to sign up to take part in the water sampling. Click here for complete information.
City Council Recognizes Hospice Care and SkillsUSA
Mayor Troy Brumbalow and City Council presented proclamations honoring Hospice Care facilities and SkillsUSA, a career-oriented student organization, during their regular November meeting. Representatives of Bridgeway Hospice & Palliative Care accepted the hospice care proclamation, while representatives of the Alliance Academy for Innovation's SkillsUSA Chapter accepted the proclamation for their organization.

A third proclamation was also presented recognizing Small Business Saturday, which encourages residents to "shop small" at locally owned establishments the Saturday following Thanksgiving.

Also during the November Work Session and Regular Meeting, City Council:

  • Held a public hearing on the proposed 2020 City of Cumming Budget. No one spoke in favor or against the budget, which is slated to be considered for adoption during the Dec. 3 Work Session.

  • Approved a contract with Beltan Properties, Inc. of Flowery Branch to serve as the General Contractor for the Cumming City Center. Beltan was selected out of five respondents who submitted proposals for the project. A Construction Management Agreement was drafted by the City Attorney with input from the City's insurance provider to hire Beltan as Construction Manager for a total of $2.5 million.

  • Approved a rezoning application from Forsyth Central Properties with several conditions.

  • Approved a Fire Safety and Prevention Ordinance which brings the City's ordinance up-to-date with requests that had been made by the Forsyth County Fire Marshal.

  • Heard a recap of the 2019 Cumming Country Fair & Festival. Fairgrounds Director Tracy Helms said this year's fair was one of the most successful in the even'ts 25-year history. Among the highlights were four record-breaking days and the overall fair being the highest grossing fair on record.

  • Approved a resolution regarding the application for and commitment to the funding of a recreational trails project to be located at the City Center.

  • Approved the following purchases: A Ventrac Multipurpose Tractor for the Streets Department; a Multi-Use Tractor for use at the Cumming Fairgrounds; a Records Management System for use by the Cumming Police Department; and a Dehumidification Unit for use at the Cumming Aquatic Center.
