Nancy’s Notes - #42

Dear Friends,

I believe I shared in this space before that as of this past January 1st, I have been reading 3 chapters of Scripture each day. Today I finished Joshua and began Judges. In Joshua 24, Joshua knows he is about to die and reviews the history of the Hebrew people and God’s faithfulness through it all. Then Joshua 24:14-15, Joshua says to the people, “Now therefore revere the LORD, and serve him in sincerity and in faithfulness; put away the gods that your ancestors served beyond the River and in Egypt, and serve the LORD. Now if you are unwilling to serve the LORD, choose this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your ancestors served in the region beyond the River or the gods of Amorites in whose land you are living; but as for me and my household, we will serve the LORD.”
In this season of Lent – and beyond – each day, may we as Joshua did, choose to boldly proclaim (and live out in our lives) “…as for me and my household, we will serve the LORD.” As we walk with Jesus toward the cross during Lent, may we intentionally find ways to live out our faith in ways that are evident to those around us that we have chosen to serve the LORD. May it be so.
With you in the Lenten Journey,
                      Nancy
From the Desk of Bishop Mark J. Webb:

Praying for Ukraine this Lenten season

On Tuesday March 2, 2022, the Upper New York Area Resident Bishop, Mark J. Webb, sent a letter to the Upper New York Conference, calling on all United Methodist believers and congregations in Upper New York to fervently pray for peace in Ukraine.

In this letter, Bishop Webb offers some specific and helpful areas of payer focus related to the war in Ukraine.

Giving opportunities in response to the war in Ukraine
Individuals can give directly to the Ukrainian people through local church offerings by writing a check to the Upper New York Conference with Advance #14053A in the memo line of the checks. These checks can either be placed in an offering plate or sent directly to the Conference office.

The Ukraine UMC has created a crisis committee that will oversee all the global support that is coming in through UMCOR’s Advance #14053A “Eurasia In Mission Together - Ukraine and Moldova.” The money channeled through this Advance fund will go to the Ukraine UMC church account and decisions on how this will be used will be considered by the crisis committee, which includes pastors as well as lay leaders.

UMCOR also offers other opportunities for more specific giving to Ukrainian refugees in Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, and Romania. You can designate giving by stating it is for "Ukrainian Refugee support" to the following Advance numbers.

·    Hungary In Mission Together (Advance # 00175A)
·    Poland In Mission Together (Advance # 00408A)
·    Romania In Mission Together (Advance #00211A)
·    Slovakia In Mission Together (Advance # 00236A)

Donations for Hungary, Poland, Romania, and Slovakia should be mailed directly to UMCOR Mission Together Advances at 458 Ponce De Leon Ave NE, Atlanta, GA 30308.

Lenten study on anti-racism
General Commission on Religion and Race is offering online Lenten resources for purchase. "Faithful Lent: Connecting the Practices of Lent and Anti-racism", is a small group resource to help make connections between the traditions of Lent and the work of anti-racism. This curriculum is available to buy and download. Click here.
Lenten resources
The season of Lent is essential for those who truly seek to be disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world. Because a part of what we learn in this time of self-examination is that we are what might be most in need of transformation. We might find that what might need to grow in faith and discipleship is the church and that the transformation of the world begins with building bridges and gathering up rather than with condemnation. Focusing on discipleship
The mission of the United Methodist Church is creating disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world. So, what is a disciple?

The Upper New York Conference has updated our website to better highlight the focus of our Conference—the tab for “our focus” is on our homepage— https://www.unyumc.org. In this section we list six characteristics that define a disciple of Jesus Christ. Click here to read “Our Focus.”

Another great resource to learn more about creating disciples is the See all the People website, which is a movement to “stop fixing our church and start seeing all the people Christ calls us to reach.” #Seealllthepeople has dozens of resources on creating intentional discipleship systems and methods of building relationships.

Additional training steps will be provided over time. Imagine what God will do as more and more churches develop their process for Making Disciples of Jesus Christ for the Transformation of the World!
Women’s History Month
resource recommendations from UMW
March is Women’s History Month—a time to lift up all the women who have made an impact on our collective history.

For over 150 years, since the Woman’s Foreign Missionary Society was first formed in 1869 in Boston, United Methodist Women (UMW) has been on the forefront of developing leaders, fostering spiritual growth, and advocating for justice.

During Women’s History Month, UMW honor not only the history of United Methodist Women, but of all women.

Women in ministry: Then and now

Women who found movements are sometimes designated as “mothers.” In early Methodism, the women who earned this title bore it as a mark of distinction. They became revered as “Mothers in Israel,” an honorific which linked them and their piety, courage, and leadership with Deborah the Judge in the Old Testament.

In honor of Women’s History Month, click here to learn about the “Mothers of Israel” then and now.

The Church today benefits greatly from the unique leadership of women in ministry who stand on the shoulders of their spiritual foremothers.
Critical race theory and what Christians should know

Critical Race Theory (CRT) examines how laws in the United States have built and supported racial inequities. It is an ideological framework that names race as a social construct and asserts racialized inequities in society are fostered by historic and current systemic, institutional, and legal policies and practices.

Supporting the humanitarian response in Ukraine
The General Board of Global Ministries of The United Methodist Church is deeply troubled by the conflict between Russia and Ukraine and the ominous implications it has for escalating tensions between Russia and Western nations. They join many Christian leaders and organizations worldwide in deploring the Russian invasion of Ukraine on Feb. 24, and they ardently pray for a redirection of military action toward diplomatic measures to resolve grievances.

The United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR), the humanitarian relief arm of Global Ministries, is in communication with partners in the region and actively exploring the coordination of humanitarian response in Ukraine. You can support UMCOR’s international disaster response efforts by writing a check to the Upper New York Conference with either Advance #982450/Ukraine or UMCOR/Ukraine written in the memo line.

Update:Presentation on General Conference recorded
The Rev. Bill Mudge Senior Pastor of the Baldwinsville United Methodist Church, former Adirondack District Superintendent, and clergy General Conference delegation leader, was present on the Adirondack and Albany districts this week to answer questions and offer information and thoughts about the upcoming General Conference. There are things we know, things we don’t know, speculation, information, and misinformation. This was an opportunity to sort some of this out so that we may stay focused on our mission, and keep looking for what God is doing among and through us. Many people expressed appreciation for Bill's efforts to offer clarity and insight.

We recorded one of those gatherings. The link to the ZOOM presentation is below.

NEW- Forming the Upper New York Conference

Can you believe it has been over a decade since the Upper New York Conference was formed?

On June 19, 2010, North Central New York, Troy, Western New York, and Wyoming Conferences joined to become the Upper New York Conference. The meeting that day, known as the uniting conference, took several hours, but the work leading up to it had taken several years. Much of that work was led by the New Area/Conference Team or New ACT. For nearly two years, this 26-member team, drawn from the four upstate Conferences, met monthly to dream and plan. Under the pastoral guidance of Bishops Susan Hassinger and Marcus Matthews, the team did its work by prayerful discernment and consensus-building.

Click here to learn about the process of creating the Upper New York Conference and how the vision created for the Conference, “to live the Gospel of Jesus Christ and be God’s love with our neighbors in all places” has resulted in many good things we can celebrate.
CBOPHB delays enforcement of direct bill arrearage policy
Understanding the struggle faced by many congregations, the Conference Board of Pension and Health Benefits (CBOPHB) had voted to delay enforcement of the direct bill arrearage policy that went into effect Jan. 1, 2020, for years 2020 and 2021. The CBOPHB has approved to continue the delayed enforcement through Dec. 31, 2022, recognizing that there are churches that are still struggling financially.

General report by the Protocol Commission

During the Upper New York (UNY) Annual Conference held virtually in June of 2021, the body passed Resolution UNYAC2021.7 which created a Study Commission to examine the readiness in the UNYUMC for the Implementation of the Protocol of Reconciliation and Grace Through Separation. This commission is composed of the Conference Treasurer, Dean of the Cabinet, Conference Chancellor, Director of Connectional Ministries, Director of Vital Congregations and representatives of the Committee on Finance and Administration, Board of Ordained Ministry, Board of Trustees, Board of Pensions and Health Benefits, General and Jurisdictional Conference Delegations, and up to three persons named by Nominations and Leadership Development.

The Study Commission met via Zoom several times and created two surveys for both clergy and congregations. The surveys were transmitted to congregations and clergy via District offices and District Administrative Assistants.

The Study Commission has created a report with observations of the surveys and the survey results. Click here to access the report.

Don't Wait, Get Your Federal Tax Exemption Letter!

Did you know that, as a United Methodist ministry, it is easy to get a letter proving your tax-exempt status – without applying directly to the Internal Revenue Service? The General Council on Finance and Administration (GCFA), and sister agency to (GBHEM), United Methodist Women, and others, have received a “group ruling” designation from the IRS.
Basically, an umbrella or central organization (GCFA) takes over some of the administrative functions that would normally fall to a backlogged IRS, so that subordinate organizations, like United Methodist camps, churches, and other ministries can apply to the central organization for inclusion in their group. What that means for you is that, rather than applying directly to the IRS, you can apply online easily and quickly through GCFA. GCFA, rather than the IRS, will check your documentation and issue a letter of inclusion – meaning that you are included in the overall United Methodist group ruling for tax exemption.
Don't wait. Recently the IRS issued notice that it may change the group ruling policy. While we don’t know when those changes may take place, it is quick and easy to get a letter of inclusion in the denominational group ruling currently, so act quickly, before any changes take place.
There are a couple of important things to note: The online form is very straightforward for local United Methodist churches and the local church can quickly get its letter at the below link. For ministries that are affiliated as United Methodist organizations, such as a church, child care program, or a summer camp, the organization must have its own EIN, board, and organizing documents. Also, this tax exemption verifies your federal status and does not affect any state tax ruling.
You can visit www.umgroupruling.org to get started.

Reminder: Sexual Harassment training mandatory

This is a reminder that New York State employers must adopt a sexual harassment prevention policy and provide training on sexual harassment prevention to their employees on an annual basis. This includes all those employed by the local church.

There is a free on-line training that is available to all. A certificate of completion is provided when the training is complete.
