patient empowerment: the national diabetes prevention program helps people make lasting lifestyle changes to improve health
The Centers for Disease Prevention and Control (CDC)-led National Diabetes Prevention Program (National DPP) has been proven to help people make the lifestyle changes needed to prevent or delay type 2 diabetes. Through the program, eligible participants work with a trained coach to make lasting lifestyle changes, discover how to eat healthy and add more physical activity into their day, and find out how to manage stress, stay motivated, and solve problems that can slow progress.
The
YMCA of Delaware's Diabetes Prevention Program
helps those at high risk adopt and maintain healthy lifestyles while reducing their chances of developing type 2 diabetes. To learn more about the benefits of the YMCA's National DPP, listen in on a recently
recorded interview
with Quality Insights and Kathryn Luebke,
Coordinator of Health Organization at the YMCA of Delaware.

Pharmacists are in a unique position to support their patients in preventing or delaying the onset of type 2 diabetes. The CDC has developed several
resources
to help you determine the best role for pharmacists in diabetes prevention. Whether you're a pharmacist, part of the pharmacy workforce, or working with pharmacy groups, you can get involved by:
- Promoting awareness of prediabetes and the National DPP;
- Screening and testing patients for prediabetes and referring those eligible to a CDC-recognized organization offering the National DPP lifestyle change program; and/or
- Applying for CDC recognition to offer the program in your pharmacy.
