Principal's Corner
by Donna Laughlin
We’ve finished our eleventh week of school—God is so good! We’ve completed one quarter of in-person learning and have held our parent-teacher conferences via video conferencing. In fact, many parents commented that they liked the convenience of being able to take a short break and join from their workplace.

Without a doubt, COVID-19 is changing the way we do school. While our primary classes were not able to get together to celebrate the fiftieth day of school in the Fellowship Hall with root beer floats like they did last year, they were still able to go to the gym, one class at a time, for their sock hop—physically distanced, of course.

Jump Rope for Heart, now call Kids Heart Challenge, was done physically distanced, as well. In fact, this year our kids did an outstanding job raising funds for the American Heart Association. Together, they raised a near-record amount of $9,312.42. Forty-four students who raised $75 or more had the privilege of sliming Mrs. Dalpini yesterday at dismissal time. This year our top fundraisers were A.J. Joanis, Ava Hill, Max Parish, Jayce Benedetto, and Vaughn Houser. The American Heart Association thanks each and every person who participated in this year's Kids Heart Challenge.

One thing that was not able to happen this week due to COVID-19 is the PTL Trunk-or-Treat, which had to be cancelled due to the rise in positivity rates in our area and the mitigation measures put in place by Governor Pritzker. I know everyone was looking forward to the event. The PTL sent home goodie bags for every student as a special treat since the event had to be cancelled.

COVID FAQs
Under what circumstances is my child allowed to learn remotely?
  • Students may learn remotely if they are going to be out several days while waiting for COVID test results, quarantining as a positive case or a close contact, or if they are a sibling or child of a positive case or close contact. They may also learn remotely if their parents have made arrangements in advance to learn remotely for an extended period of time due to concerns about the risk of infection, if there are household members with health issues, or similar circumstances. Students will not be allowed to learn remotely for mental health days, half-day absences due to appointments, or if they are staying home because they are too ill to learn. Teachers need at least a day’s notice prior to a student learning remotely.

If a student is sent home sick with suspected COVID-19 symptoms (e.g., cough, fever, diarrhea, shortness of breath, etc.), must all of their siblings and carpool participants be sent home as well and quarantined for 14 calendar days?
  • Yes. If someone is being evaluated for COVID-19, the siblings and/or carpool participants must be quarantined until an alternative diagnosis is made or a negative test result is received. If the sick student becomes a confirmed case (i.e., tests positive for COVID-19) or a probable case (i.e., has COVID-like symptoms and is epidemiologically linked to a known case), siblings and other close contacts, including carpool participants, will be required to quarantine for 14 calendar days.

How long must someone quarantine?
  • Confirmed cases are to isolate for a minimum of 10 calendar days—or if symptoms persist, when released by the Kane County Health Department. Close contacts are to quarantine for 14 calendar days. This is because the incubation period--the time they might develop symptoms after an exposure—is 14 calendar days, while the infectious period when a case can transmit illness is approximately 10 calendar days. The Kane County Health Department will provide guidance on how to safely quarantine and isolate within the household.

How many symptoms does a person need to have to be considered a suspect COVID-19 case?
  • Students and staff exhibiting one or more COVID-like symptoms are considered suspect cases and should be immediately evaluate by a physician to determine if this symptom is new or if it is part of an existing condition.
