ST. LOUISE SCHOOL PARENT BULLETIN

October 17, 2019
Dan's Blog
Today is the deadline for parents to complete the Parent Survey which I previously emailed you. If you forgot to complete the survey, check your October 10th or 14th emails to find the one from me, and click on the link within that email to complete the survey. This is a survey that every school family must complete in order to let us know on what day and time you would like your child's teacher to schedule your required November Parent-Teacher Conference.  There are also additional questions on the survey asking for your input on future tuition rates and class sizes, so you'll need about 10 minutes to answer. Thanks for completing the survey (one per school family) by today's deadline.

If you never responded to the recent text message sent by the school asking you to opt-in to our emergency messaging system, please opt-in now by texting the word YES to 87569. You will then be sure to receive texts from St. Louise School during emergencies such as school closures or lockdowns.

Remember, if we are going to start a school day late or close school due to snow, we don't broadcast on TV like the public schools and some private schools do. We instead privately broadcast to St. Louise families via email and/or via our texting system. It's therefore very important that moms and dads opt-in to receive these texts.

Finally, as I'm sure you're aware, our school staff and students regularly practice emergency evacuations in cases of fire, earthquake, and or safety lockdowns. We've already held a successful all-school fire drill, and today (weather dependent) we're planning on holding an all-school earthquake drill. Ask your child how it went, and what his/her duties were in proper behavior and actions to take from the start of the drill to its finish.

As for parents' duties, did you realize you have some too?! Should there be an actual earthquake, fire, or lockdown while school is in session, parents are not to telephone school. We will try to send out an emergency email and/or text as soon as possible, but our first priority is to attend to your children. Parents  are also not to attempt to enter a school building during an emergency. If you're able to arrive at school after an earthquake, parents should enter at the 156th Avenue entrance and proceed to the Student Pickup/Reunification Area - which will be set up in the south parking lot. The faculty member in charge of this area will direct parents to where you may wait to pick up your children. As you can imagine, we need everyone's cooperation for an orderly and systematic release of students to either their parents or to the adults listed on their emergency forms who have permission to take them home.

The school has water, food, and other supplies stored for use in emergencies when students have to remain overnight at school. Let's hope we never have to use them, but it's good to be prepared. Speaking of prepared, does your family have these plans in place? If not, you might want to set them up ASAP.

If you would like to be a part of our Emergency Preparedness Committee, helping us continually evaluate and update St. Louise's plans and supplies for emergencies such as earthquakes or lockdowns, please contact fellow parent  Joe Dickinson, the coordinate of the committee.

Enjoy God's blessings today,
Mr. Fitz

p.s.

Please register HERE to attend our November 9th Auction.  It's always such a fun event, and it's a vital event, as we have a goal of raising over $200,000 in auction revenue and fund-a-need project donations.

As for the fund-a-need for this year, we will have TWO opportunities during the live portion of the Auction for you to raise your bid card and donate your chosen gift for two school needs:

1. Our TUITION-ASSISTANCE ENDOWMENT FUND - You can help grow our fund so we can meet the needs of helping families with financial aid scholarships in order for them to afford to send their kids to St. Louise.

2. UPDATING OUR SCIENCE CURRICULUM & ENHANCING OUR SCHOOL'S TECHNOLOGY - We have plans for new purchases of updated science programs for K-8 as well as improving our wi-fi so it will reach all areas on campus.

You'll be receiving more information on our two fund-a-need projects soon. It's going to be exciting to experience the bidding and donating going on in the Westin Ballroom on November 9th! Thanks in advance for your generosity!

Calling All Veterans
and Active Military

Please note that on Monday, November 11, the entire school will be holding an outdoor ceremony at 8:30 AM in recognition of Veterans' Day. We will be praying, singing, saluting the flag, and thanking any military veterans or active military who were able to join us that morning. If you or a family member (or neighbor) is a veteran or active military, it would be great to show up outside our flag pole on Veterans' Day to join us and be recognized!

Do You Need Some Fresh Air on Fridays?

We are looking for a parent volunteer to assist with Friday recess supervision from 11:50-1:00. You get to enjoy being outdoors, watching your child play with his/her classmates while making sure all the students stay safe. You'd be working with our two instructional assistant staff plus other parent volunteers. No experience is necessary, and moms with babies in strollers or toddlers are allowed to bring their lil' ones. Please contact Lisa McKenna for more information.
Thanks to Our Fall Fix-Up Volunteers

We want to thank these volunteers for cleaning up the parish and school grounds last Saturday at our final Fix-Up of the Fall:  Jeffrey Hummer  (our volunteer, head-landscaper and foreman); Ken Kincaid; Paul McCulloch; Jose Cruz; Uyen Higashi, Paul Weber, Owen Weber (alumni); Gary Studt; Francisco Solares; Sander Munoz; Kemper Scott; Cindy Kemper; John Yuen; Sheldon Sequeira.
We'll have two Saturday morning work days coming up later in the spring. In addition, parents can easily earn volunteer hours by joining our Adopt-a-Garden program. You are assigned a small plot of land on campus and asked to come on your own schedule to keep the area free of weeds, leaves, etc. If you're interested, please contact Eric Lund

Basketball Registration Closes in One Week

It is basketball sign-up time! Please register your grade 4-8 child to be a part of St. Louise CYO Basketball's 2019-2020 season!
St. Louise basketball is for children in grades 4-8 who either attend  St. Louise School or whose parents are members of St. Louise Parish.  Registration for CYO Basketball is open to children of all skill levels - from beginners to experienced - and every child on a St. Louise  team will get guaranteed playing time in all the games.
All regular season CYO basketball games are held on weekends, either Saturday or Sunday, and most St. Louise teams get to play a number of games in our home gym. The first  games of the season start on the weekend of November 16, and the regular season ends by January 27. No games are sche duled over Thanksgiving and Christmas weekends. Teams typically play 7 or 8 regular season games.
All registration/enrollment is done online here, and regular registration  closes on Friday, October 25, at 11:59 pm. (Late Registration runs from October 26 to November 8, and the fee increases $35.)  Registration fees paid during the regular  registration period are  $75 for the first child registered within a family, and  $55 for all additional children registered within the same family.
If you have questions, please contact St. Louise Basketball Coordinator, Rodney Thomas .
You're Invited to this Special Presentation

St. Louise Parish's Gospel-of-Life group is presenting an informative evening for all parishioners and school parents.  Seattle attorney Margaret Dore will be in the Parish Hall to show and discuss the documentary, Fatal Flaws. This documentary explains how the Death with Dignity Act applies to people with years or decades to live and exposes us and our loved ones to abuse and exploitation. The evening begins at 6:30PM on November 2.  Refreshments will be served.
Parents Need All the Support They Can Get

What is conscience? How can I help my children form true Christian consciences? How can I help my children make the best decisions when they faced with a new or unfamiliar situations? How can I explain the difference between following conscience and doing what "feels good at the moment" or what gets me "off the hook"?
Sister Carolyn Roeber will be at St. Louise to meet with parents and address these and other important practical issues that arise in the formation of your children as citizens of this world and the next.  Sister's deep expertise and practical wisdom are sure to give you skills and support to address this critical dimension of your children's formation for Faith & Life. The event, sponsored by the parish's Adult Faith Formation Committee, begins at 6PM on November 16 in the Parish Hall.

Archdiocese Is Asking for Your Support

The Called to Serve as Christ campaign is an extraordinary opportunity for all to play a role in strengthening the Catholic Church in Western Washington. This campaign will focus on raising $100 million to strengthen our priest pension and retirement medical plans, provide support to women religious serving or who have served in the Archdiocese of Seattle, and assist key efforts in our parishes. There are two questions that are often asked about the campaign so we'd like to share them and the answers to each one:

  • Will any of the Called to Serve as Christ campaign money be used to pay clergy abuse claims?
No. The money for abuse claims was paid by the archdiocesan insurance program. Money for the campaign is put in a separate bank account overseen by a separately incorporated nonprofit entity - The Called to Serve as Christ Campaign Fund. Both plans are trusts and assets that can only be used for priest pension and medical benefits. In other words, they can't be used to pay for anything other than those benefits.

  • How did the archdiocese decide what amount to ask my family?
Ask amounts were set by looking at a number of factors, including: a parish offertory snapshot, parishioners giving history to the Annual Catholic Appeal, other archdiocesan giving history (Crozier Society, etc.), planning study responses, other public knowledge of philanthropic giving, and capacity and an evaluation done by the parish. The archdiocese has no way of knowing a family's personal financial situation, income or obligations. Capital campaigns are about extraordinary giving towards extraordinary goals. To accomplish these goals, every parish family is humbly invited to consider a gift above and beyond their regular support to their parish and the Appeal. The amount of your gift or pledge is your personal decision.

You probably have other questions so we invite you to go over the list of frequently asked questions that's available on our parish website here or you can get a printed copy from the parish office. Please visit the Stories of Vocation and Service about our priests and women religious here. You can also read Fr. Gary's letter about the campaign here.

By now you should have received a campaign packet through the mail. Kindly take the time to read the material provided about the campaign and Archbishop Etienne's invitation. Please prayerfully consider the level of support that the good Lord is moving your heart to do for the campaign. Please call the parish office or send an email to [email protected] if you haven't received your campaign packet or for any other inquiries.

Thank you for your prayers and generous support for the Called to Serve as Christ campaign.
