COMMUNITIES IN SCHOOLS OF
RENTON & TUKWILA
|
|
|
It’s no secret that surrounding a child with support will help them thrive in school and life. Fortunately, in our region we have an organization committed to that mission. Communities in Schools Renton-Tukwila (CISRT) has been an anchor to thousands of students over its 24-year history, ensuring that kids have what they need to forge a bright future.
Working directly inside 18 schools in Renton and Tukwila, CISRT delivers a unique model of Integrated Student Supports to address the identified needs of each school and its individual students who are facing non-academic barriers to success. Students are referred for a variety of reasons, including issues related to poverty, such as hunger and homelessness; physical, social, behavior and/or mental health issues; and family trauma.
CISRT has had a close partnership with the Renton School District and City of Renton over those two dozen years, which has helped make it a successful model. Some of the components of the CISRT model include:
- Family Liaisons who work with elementary students and families dealing with crisis and connect them to a comprehensive range of community services.
- Student Success Liaisons who work in secondary schools to address the identified needs of students who are facing non-academic barriers to success.
- A Mobile Case-Manager who helps unaccompanied minors (those not living with a parent or guardian) stabilize their lives. The case-manager works with students in all four Renton high schools and helps them get the resources they need while also working with them to develop post high school plans. Last year, another RRCF Fund, the First Financial Northwest Fund, made a grant to CISRT to help get this program off the ground.
- Targeted empowerment groups for middle school students.
- School-based mentoring to provide social and emotional support.
Mentors meet with students for one-hour a week during the school-day. CISRT is one of Renton Regional Community Foundation’s longstanding funds, having established an agency reserve fund in 2000. This money generates a larger return by being pooled with RRCF’s other funds. We are proud to be able to partner with CISRT in this way.
If you are inspired by CISRT’s mission, please contact Kathy Ulrich, Development Director, at
KUlrich@Rentonwa.gov
to learn how you can be involved as a mentor, a coordinator for a specific school drive, or in other ways.

The Practice of Giving Thanks
We all know that November is particularly a month where people think about gratitude, but did you also know Philanthropy Day falls in November? On that day, November 15
th
, we hosted a Gratitude Lunch to appreciate and recognize our Friends of the Foundation and those in our Legacy Society. These generous individuals support our general programs and services and/or have designated RRCF in their will. We couldn’t do our work without them!
If you are interested in learning more about being a Friend or part of the Legacy Society, contact LeAnne Moss, Executive Director, at
