All About Ice
Ice sailing on Newfound Lake, NEIYA
A frozen lake is a ready-made playground. From snowshoeing and pond hockey to ice fishing and snowmobiling, there’s a myriad of ways to enjoy the lake in the winter. For the daredevil types, you can even join the sport of ice sailing !
Whatever the activity, make sure you are familiar with Ice Safety and remember ice is NEVER 100% safe.
Newfound Ice Report
Ice continues to spread across the lake, the broads are still open water.

Last year the lake's ice cover was 100% by January 2nd.
We aren’t the only species busy with winter activities!
Many amphibians and reptiles spend the winter in the mud at the bottom of the lake, making use of their superpower ability to absorb oxygen through their skin. Others burrow into leaf litter on the shoreline and alter their body chemistry to produce their own natural antifreeze.
Snapping Turtle on Ice, Mon@rch's Nature Blog
Members of the catfish family forego the antifreeze altogether and freeze completely solid during the winter! But not everybody slows down. Cold water fish species, such as trout and salmon, and even some turtles remain active. Take a look under the ice and you may see a snapping turtle swimming by!
Even the lake itself has some unusual characteristics when covered with ice.  Have you ever heard it sing? Check out the video below!
