The First-Ever VIRTUAL VOS Is Coming to You!
 Dear VOS Family,
That's right, clean up the office, dust off those decorative pillows and get the fridge stocked up because VOS is coming to YOUR place this year! By now, I assume that you've heard the news that we will be conducting the first ever VIRTUAL VOS in March 2021 in lieu of hosting it at Big Sky, Montana. That decision came on the heels of an announcement by the Madison County Department of Health (the county where Big Sky Resort is located) that gatherings larger than 50 persons would not be permitted due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Concurrently, our membership survey revealed that ~ 60% of respondents were unlikely to travel to Big Sky at this time. So VOS is coming to you!! ... should we knock first or just walk in?
Being one who tends to see the glass as half full, I am now excited for the challenge to envision and create a VIRTUAL VOS that makes you feel ... like you are at VOS!! The VOS Conference each year is really a celebration of great science, friendship, support of "the next generation," learning about new products and services from our sponsors and exhibitors, and silly competitions. We plan to offer just that! As with any VOS Conference, you MUST register to attend.
VIRTUAL VOS Conference registrants will enjoy real-time access to scientific abstract presentations and the associated Q&A that follows. In fact, you also will be able to interact with the speaker during the presentation via chat since the actual presentation will have been pre-recorded (how fun is that?). You can expect to enjoy the Mark Bloomberg Research Award Presentations session as well as thought-provoking presentations by Leesa Galatz, MD, our 2021 Jacques Jenny Lecturer. Don't worry, the conference won't be all brainwork; you'll have plenty of silly games and competitions as well as the opportunity to interact with your friends and colleagues by requesting private breakout rooms. Will I see you at the morning Coffee House or the afternoon Happy Hours? ... I sure hope so! I am 100% confident that it will be the absolute best VIRTUAL VOS you've ever attended (okay, that was an easy one).
Thank you to the many VOS members who have already reached out to ask what they can do to help out in this crazy year ... and that got me to thinking, there are a few things that EVERYBODY can do to help out with this first ever VIRTUAL VOS:
- First, fill out those surveys and let us know your thoughts. You've recently received a survey requesting your input on your VIRTUAL VOS preferences ... please take a moment to fill out the short survey so that your Board of Directors and our NCSU-based Conference Planning Team can continue to design a great experience for you.
- Second, you can submit an abstract for presentation at the 2021 VIRTUAL VOS. The fact is, YOU are the VOS and the great science that we come to hear each year NEEDS you. As for you young'uns, don't be discouraged from submitting for a possible Mark Bloomberg Resident Research Award presentation; award recipients will receive the usual high honor and recognition that they deserve, but they will also receive the usual travel cash award that THIS TIME can be applied toward travel expenses to attend the 2022 World Veterinary Orthopaedic Congress in Snowmass, CO!!!! That November 1 abstract submission deadline is closing in fast!
- Third, get those VOS membership dues paid. $110 ($25 for students, interns and residents) is a bargain given the many benefits (see www.vosdvm.org for complete details). In a nutshell, your membership will pay for itself in conference registration discounts alone, and the benefits extend well beyond that. These dues keep our organization viable and allow us to offer the annual conference. Besides, Heidi DeCamp is our new Executive Secretary and you wouldn't want to be "that guy" or "that gal" that requires her to track you down when she could be helping us focus on the VIRTUAL VOS, would you?
- Finally, consider a year-end VOS Educational Foundation (VOSEF) donation. We are often prompted to think about making a VOSEF donation while on-site at the conference. Since VIRTUAL VOS is coming into your home / office, we'd hate to barge in and then ask you for money ... save us all that embarrassment and "telethon feel" by making your year-end donation online today (www.vosdvm.org).
 Please allow me to close with this sentiment: As I reflect on my years attending VOS, I now realize that as much as I love the recreation each year ... that is really only the backdrop for the real magic. What I really love about VOS is the people and the spirit. VIRTUAL VOS will have everything but the backdrop, and I can't wait to see you there!!

VOS RESEARCH GRANT APPLICATIONS NOW DUE NOVEMBER 1ST!

Description: The VOS Hohn-Johnson and Wade O. Brinker Research Awards fund research in musculoskeletal conditions in animals.
Funding: The Hohn-Johnson award is limited to $40,000. The Wade O. Brinker Resident award is limited to $12,000.
Hohn-Johnson and Wade O. Brinker award principal investigators must be active members of the VOS as of 1st of September in the year of application.
Review Process: The VOS research committee reviews the proposals, which are evaluated using the following criteria:
- Relevance to VOS goals and priorities
- Scientific and technical quality of the idea
- Scientific and technological quality of the methods
- Feasibility of accomplishing objectives within the proposed time line
- Relevance of objectives to current literature
Awards: The outcome of the VOS research committee review will be presented to the Spring VOS Board of Directors and a decision of funding announced at the annual VOS meeting.
DEADLINE: November 1, 2020

48th Annual Veterinary Orthopedic Society Conference

We invite practitioners, academicians, and researchers interested in large animal, small animal, and exotic species, to submit abstracts of novel studies in practical and scientific topics related to veterinary orthopedics and traumatology. Preference will be given to abstracts that have clinical relevance. Papers addressing results of controlled retrospective and prospective clinical studies are strongly encouraged. Clinician investigators should also consider submitting innovative surgical techniques, or case reports describing unusual or difficult cases as these will be reviewed separate from the scientific abstracts. Presentations will be limited to 10 minutes and followed by 5 minutes of discussion. Posters must fit within the 4' (height) x 4' (width) area provided.
The call for abstracts is now open and will close on November 1st, 2020 for both podium presentations and posters. Submission categories will be:
- Clinical/Scientific Studies
- Case reports: a maximum of three novel or interesting cases
The Mark S. Bloomberg Memorial Resident Research Award was established to recognize outstanding resident abstract submissions to the scientific program. At least one recipient and up to seven recipients per year will be awarded up to $1,500.00 towards expenses to attend and present their abstract at our annual meeting. Only individuals currently in a residency training program or within 2 years of completion of a formal residency program are eligible. The abstract submission may only be of studies conducted during the residency program. All abstracts being submitted for consideration of this award must indicate so on the online submission form.
The Student/Intern Research Award was established to recognize outstanding student or intern abstract submissions to the scientific program. Up to two recipients will be awarded (depending on abstract quality) up to $1,500.00 towards expenses to attend and present their abstract at our annual meeting. Only individuals currently in a DVM or Intern training program or within 1 year of completion of a formal internship or DVM program are eligible. The work must be performed as a student or intern. All abstracts being submitted for consideration of this award must indicate so on the online submission form.
