CROSS COUNTRY
In the words of Forrest Gump, “I just felt like running. I never thought it would take me anywhere.” Mica Mountain Cross Country program punched a ticket to go somewhere! The boys' team of Carter Jones, Logan Bonhorst, Connor Grusendorf, Roman Romero, Nate Bersbach, Dakota Zelmanovits, and Carter Cox qualified to race with the best at State. Additionally, the girls' team fought a great team battle and junior Alonna Hannibal qualified as a top finisher to also go to State. See? Running can most definitely take you places!

COLLEGE BOUND BOLTS
How Well-tuned are Your Executive Functioning Skills?

Executive function is a set of mental skills that help us to reach our goals. These skills include effectively utilizing our working memory, flexible thinking, and self-control. They help us to manage daily life by following directions, focusing, and handling our stressors and emotions. Students who perform poorly are often thought of as not being skilled in time management or having good organizational or study skills. People are often surprised to learn that many high-performing students may also need help with their executive functioning skills. Students who possess finely-tuned executive functioning skills have the foundation needed to get into college and to experience academic success.

Although these skills don’t evolve naturally with every student, they are skills that can definitely be learned. Organizing, planning, and time management are crucial executive functioning skills. These skills not only help students to develop a disciplined approach to academics, but they also lead to more confidence, better grades, and less stress. Students who practice implementing some of the following suggestions will find that they are more productive and less stressed.

Create a Dedicated Study Time and Create a Weekly Schedule - Set up periods of time devoted only to homework or studying. Find your most productive time of day, a time when you know you’re most efficient. Shut off your phone and email until after your work is done. Don’t allow yourself to be sidetracked during your dedicated study time. Remember to also schedule some time to relax!

Start a Daily To-Do List - Start each day with a list of what you need to accomplish. Put the most important tasks at the top and tackle them first. Gather any items you may need (projects, supplies, forms, etc.). If you don’t complete every item on your list simply add it to the next day’s to-do list. Reward yourself if you accomplish everything on your list!

Set Reminders for Yourself – Use a whiteboard to list your tasks (wipe away each task completed). Use post-it notes. Send email reminders to yourself. Set alarms on your phone. Use the electronic calendar (with reminders) on your computer. Use an agenda and refer to it frequently.

Know Your Personal Limits - Be honest, have you over-extended yourself? It’s okay to say "no”. Don’t allow yourself to get involved in more activities than you can handle, even if your friends are pushing you. Knowing your limits and sticking to them will go a long way in keeping your to-do list a manageable size and keeping your stress levels to a minimum.

Time is one of the most important resources of an active high school student. Students who learn to manage it well often find that they can accomplish more in less time, which permits more free time. More free time allows you to focus, de-stress, make better decisions and take advantage of more opportunities. Good time management can improve many aspects of your life.

**As a reminder, each Dare utilizes the C.A.R.E model, (Conversation starters, Acts of kindness, Recreation and rest, and Expression of love) and lets you know what the area of focus is.**
