Kappa Sigma Legacy Shines Through on Erwin Center's Closing Night.

The University of Texas celebrated the end of an era on February 28 in the final game of the Longhorn Men’s Basketball season, playing Baylor at the iconic Frank Erwin Center. This facility, once known as the Super Drum, was renamed for Tau Initiate, co-founder of the Texas Kappa Sigma Educational Foundation, and former Chairman of the Board of Regents, Frank Erwin Jr. '38.
In the photo above, Erwin is represented by his son, Frank Erwin III. Standing next to him are two daughters of Tau Initiate and world-renowned heart surgeon Denton Cooley MD '38, for whom UT’s practice facility was named. Both buildings will be cleared to begin construction on the Dell Medical School.

The imposing bronze bust of Erwin, which stood for a number of years in the Erwin Center foyer, now resides in the Great Room of the Warren Residence Hall.
The bust, 6’ 7” in height, was commissioned by Tau alumnus Nick Kralj ’62, who presented it as a gift to the University of Texas in 1985 to be exhibited in the Erwin Center, where it remained until its move to the Residence Hall in 2017.
Dr. Cooley, just months before his death, was instrumental in helping Kralj get approval from the University to have the bust moved from the Erwin Center to Warren Residence Hall, now its permanent home.  A bust of Dr. Cooley also resides in the Great Room.

Erwin was first honored as the Tau Man of the Year in 1965 and Cooley was honored the following year in 1966. These men, through their accomplishments, leadership, and lifelong commitment to their Tau brothers, helped make Kappa Sigma one of the most prestigious fraternities at the University of Texas, and it remains so today.

Fortunately, even as their namesake buildings are razed, there are still other buildings on campus named for Tau initiates, including Beauford Jester, Harry Ransom, and T.U. Taylor.
