No Madness here this month
March is upon us -- It's time to think spring!

OK, if you've lived in the northwoods for any time at all, you know that March is not usually spring. But the days are getting longer, Daylight Savings Time is getting close, and it IS time to put in your guess for our annual "When Will It Melt?" contest, where you guess when the giant snow pile across the street will finally be gone. Details are below.

We also have several informative and fun events coming up this month. Check out our website for the latest event details. I hope you'll try to join us for some of them. See you soon at the library!

Discovering Dragonflies

The Discovery Center will pay us a visit this week for their annual "Knowledge at Noon" library program series. Join us on Wednesday, March 2 at 12:00 p.m. for a program on Discovering Dragonflies. These fascinating ancient creatures can fly backwards, intercept prey mid-air, see 360 degrees around them, and they live most of their lives underwater!

This is a free program open to everyone. Donations to the Discovery Center are appreciated.
Introduction to Square Dancing

You don't have to be a "dancer" to square dance! Come and learn how with a free introductory program at the library on Saturday, March 26 at 1:30 p.m.

Square dance caller Amanda Herdt will move you through some basic square dance steps such as Do-si-do, Allemande Left and Promenade, to the beat of modern country and rock music. Square dancing is a fun way to “move to music,” get exercise, learn a new skill, and make new friends.

No partner is needed and all ages are welcome. Wear comfortable clothes and shoes. Refreshments will be served. This program is sponsored by the Friends of the Mercer Public Library and by the Levis & Lace Square Dance Club of Woodruff.

Please register in advance for this free, fun afternoon by calling the Mercer Public Library at 715-476-2366. Deadline for registration is Wednesday, March 23rd, 2022.
When Will It Melt?

It's just about time for our annual "When Will It Melt?" contest!

Each year we place our bets on when the snow pile across the street will finally disappear completely. This is where the Town of Mercer piles up all the snow they've removed from downtown, and until recently it wasn't looking very impressive. After last week's snowfall, we've got a real contest now!

Stop in at the library to place your guess between March 1 and March 31. You have to visit in person to place a guess. Once a particular date has two names on it no one else will be able to guess that date, so don't delay! Prizes to be announced soon!
Computer Classes

The library will offer two scheduled computer classes this month. Both classes are free and open to all levels. Bring your questions!

  • iPhone and iPad Tips and Tricks - Monday, March 7 at 11:30 a.m.
  • Social Media for small businesses and organizations - Thursday, March 24 at 11:30 a.m.

Remember that tech help appointments are available for your other questions, too. We schedule tech appointments on most Tuesdays or other days as needed. Call for an appointment with librarian Teresa Schmidt, 715-476-2366.
Knitting at the library

An informal group of knitters, crocheters, and other crafters will meet at the library on Tuesday mornings at 9:00 to 11:30 a.m. All are welcome to drop in! Bring a work in progress, show off your completed projects, or just enjoy the company of your fellow crafters.
March Book Club schedule

Our two Book Clubs each meet once a month, and new members are always welcome. Copies of the books are available to borrow from the library.

Digital Library now includes more magazines!

The digital library has recently added hundreds of magazine titles, too! Download the latest issues with no waiting. The collection includes popular news magazines, titles for almost any hobby you can think of, fashion, kids and teens, and much more.

Use the Libby app (iOS | Android) for your mobile device and log in with your library card number. If you're a Kindle user, you can login to the Wisconsin's Digital Library website, check out the titles you want, and then send them to your Kindle through your Amazon account.
