Annual Catholic Appeal, 2020
This week, you will receive Archbishop Etienne's letter inviting us all to support generously the essential ministries and shared services of the Archdiocese through the Annual Catholic Appeal. Although we are in unprecedented times right now, the needs of the wider community continue. I ask that if you are able to contribute, know that each dollar will make a difference.

You will be hearing more about the ACA from Fr. Crispin in our letter and at Mass. St. John's goal this year is $98,710. If we exceed this goal, all excess payments received will come back to the parish and 100% of these funds will into our operating budget to help offset the significant loss of giving due to COVID-19.

Since we cannot celebrate Mass at this time, the easiest way to contribute is to make your payment  online. Click here to donate.

Thank you in advance for your continued support!
Keeping the Faith when we can't be together

Has it been seven weeks that we haven't been able to gather in our beautiful church and praise the Lord together? I know I miss Sunday mornings in church so much!

The number of online resources for Faith Formation can be overwhelming, and for our children already spending a lot of time on Zoom meetings or other online classes, adding more online isn't the best answer.

Parents, you can still be a beacon of faith for your children. When they see you pray, they will want to join you. When you call up mass on your laptop or cast it to your TV, and watch together, you are feeding the faith of your family.

The Seattle Archdiocese Office of Marriage and Family Life has a website with resources to use to keep the faith at home. Click here.

Need more resources? I am happy to help with recommendations or if your child would appreciate a hard copy, let me know. My kids are thrilled to get something addressed to them in the mail!

BTK-8 by the end of the week for immediate use!

The Scarlet and the Black: The True Story of Monsignor Hugh O'Flaherty, Hero of the Vatican Underground   by J.P. Gallagher
It has all the hallmarks of a best-selling fictional thriller: espionage, conspiracy, a struggle against evil powers, undercover work by dark of night... but it's all true. The Scarlet and the Black tells the astonishing and heroic true story of Monsignor Hugh O'Flaherty.  As a top man in the Vatican Holy Office, Msgr. O'Flaherty sprang into action, organizing a sophisticated team that included men and women of many nationalities, religions, and political views to save Jews and POWs from the Nazi machine. Despite Kappler's numerous attempts to assassinate him, O'Flaherty persisted, and his efforts saved thousands of Jews and POWs.
The book is available on Amazon, but delivery times are long so order it quickly. You can also watch the movie on Amazon Prime.

We will meet via Zoom at the end of May (date TBD).
Please contact [email protected] if you would like to join.
A note from the Director of Sacraments
At this time, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we are unable to celebrate the Sacraments of our Church as we usually would. Anointing of the Sick can be arranged-please contact us directly if that Sacrament is needed, at 206-782-2810 or email to [email protected] .  If it is a pastoral emergency please call 206-300-0972.

Other sacraments (first communion, marriage, funeral masses) will be celebrated once we are able to join together in our church. We ask that everyone offer up prayers for those families who are having to postpone a sacramental celebration. We especially pray for our First Communion Families, and for those families preparing for Baptism, and entry into the Church.

"Give and gifts will be given to you." -Luke 6:38

As many in our community struggle with the effects of Coronavirus,
St. John has not been immune. The decision by Archbishop Etienne to suspended all Masses until further notice was an important step in helping slow the spread of the virus and was not taken lightly.

Not being able to come together each week to celebrate the Eucharist has taken a toll on our spiritual life and also has seriously impacted our weekly collection. Like most parishes, 90% of our revenue comes from the generous support of our faith community. This generosity supports the basic operations (payroll, utilities, maintenance, etc.) and ministries of our church.

Your continued support of St. John will ensure the financial viability to get us through this crisis!  Click here to donate now.

Asante Sana to those who are already continuing to mail in checks and donate online. Your support means so much!
Laudato Si in Action
Sick World
"We carried on regardless, thinking we would stay healthy in a world that was sick," Pope Francis said at the end of March. A sick world and now sick us. The inextricable connection between the health of the environment and the health of the world's people.

But we are not doomed, there is hope. "The worldwide coronavirus pandemic is not God's judgment on humanity, but God's call on people to judge what is most important to them and resolve to act accordingly from now on."

We are all connected. We always have been, but now it is more apparent than perhaps ever before. We need to comfort each other and make lasting changes in our value system to ensure a healthy world exists for future generations.

So, what will you change?

Working together, we can help take care of our common home.
