Handwork teacher, Barbara Buchman, describes the introduction of knitting to the first graders in terms of togetherness and abundance. Yesterday, the students were each given a skein of yarn that they wound into a large ball... one that seems like it could go on forever.

Shepherds' Play

The WWS faculty warmly invites all members of the community to this year's Shepherds' Play tomorrow at 7pm.
The Shepherds' Play is one of three “miracle plays" called the Oberufer Plays which originated in central Europe in the Middle Ages. The plays were passed down orally through the generations until an associate of Rudolf Steiner wrote them down in the late 19th century. Rudolf Steiner and the teachers in the first Waldorf school in Stuttgart performed these plays, and they have since been performed at Waldorf schools throughout the world. The Shepherds' Play is offered as a gift from the WWS faculty to the community. It is always fun for the students to see which parts their teachers play...
Please join us for an evening of witty language, singing, physical comedy, and moments of wonder. The Shepherds' Play is suitable for all ages.

Martin Luther King, Jr. Morning of Service Work
Monday, January 20 from 10am-12pm
As we have done in the past, we will gather for a morning of service on MLK Day 2020. All are welcome, but we need a few folks to
sign up for specific tasks
.
We will:
- create gifts for children at NIH including felt pencil toppers, tassel necklaces, tic-tac-toe games, notebooks, and felt pencil pouches
- collect toiletries for the National Center for Children and Families
- make scarves for Operation Gratitude for our service men and women
- ...and more!
As your “admissions ticket”, please bring toiletries or infant supplies (diapers, wipes, etc.) for
NCCF
.
Please note that most activities are for children grade 1 and up.

Many thanks to the parents who joined the Parent Organization Steering Committee (POSC) this fall (Kelly Foster, Amanda Willis, and Yvonne Rock Takahashi) - we now have 6 members on the POSC representing all 3 areas of WWS!
The POSC wants to give a very warm thank you and farewell to Carolina Cheida as she moves back home to Brazil over the holidays. We appreciate her dedication to the POSC, the Diversity Committee, and to the lunch program! We will miss her!

Parent Organization Book Club
The POSC is launching a new Book Club in 2020 for parents, faculty, and staff.

The story of Jesus’ birth, childhood and youth will come to life as professional New York actor and storyteller Glen Williamson performs. Harmonizing the accounts of Matthew and Luke and weaving the threads of many traditions into an intimate but cosmic drama - Adam and Eve, Moses, Adonis, Osiris, Isis, Apollo, Krishna, Buddha and Zarathustra all appear in this sometimes astonishing retelling of the greatest story ever told. This saga is based on the Gospels and the work of spiritual researcher Rudolf Steiner and theologians Emil Bock and Edward R. Smith. The performance runs one hour and fifteen minutes.

Sitter Needed for 2.5 Year Old
We are looking for a sitter to spend a couple hours a week - Saturday mornings from about 9:00-12:30 to take care of our very fun and energetic 2.5 year old. If the weather is decent, we'd love for the time to be spent at the playground, walking on the nearby trail, library, etc. so I can prepare our home for the arrival of our second child in March. We'd love the sitter to begin as soon as January 4, 2020.
There may be some additional ad hoc evenings if that is of interest, but we'd love to begin with Saturdays. If you or anyone you know might be interested, please share this with them. We live behind Northwood High School in Silver Spring, MD.

Mindful Connections to Earth: Workshop for Educators

World renowned mindfulness educator Maria Kluge will offer a
workshop for D.C. area teachers
and other school staff on how to help students reconnect with the earth using mindfulness. This workshop is sponsored by the Washington Yu Ying Public Charter School and DC Area Educators for Social Justice as part of the Zinn Education Project Teach Climate Justice campaign.
Maria went through Waldorf Education in Germany (Munich) and did her mindfulness training with Jon Kabat Zinn.
