Federal Regulatory Updates
New NIH Grants Policy Statement
NIH released a new NIH Grants Policy Statement. This revision is applicable to all NIH grants and cooperative agreements with budget periods on or after October 1, 2019.

While NIH does not list the new definition of Other Support as a significant change, researchers should be aware of the new definition when preparing Other Support documents for proposals and JITs.

Other Support: Includes all resources made available to researcher or senior key personnel in support of and/or related to all of their research endeavors, regardless of whether or not they have monetary value and regardless of whether they are based at the institution the researcher identifies for the current grant . Other support does not include training awards, prizes, gifts or start-up support from the US based institution.

SciENcv for NSF Biosketches

The updated NSF PAPPG to be released in the upcoming months will require a change for biographical sketches preparation.

NSF will only accept PDFs for biographical sketches that are generated through use of an NSF-approved format.  NSF has designated SciENCv as an NSF-approved format for submission of biographical sketches.

Investigators may start using SciENcv to build their biosketches now, and do not need to wait until the new PAPPG is released.

Biosketches built in SciENcv will pass compliance checks upon submission through Research.gov and FastLane.

ORCID ID Requirement for NIH

Beginning with receipt dates on or after January 25, 2020, the requirement for ORCID identifiers will be enforced at the time of application for individual fellowship and career development awards, including the following:

F05, F30, F31, F32, F33, F37, F38, F99/K00, FI2, K01, K02, K05, K07, K08, K18, K22, K23, K24, K25, K26, K38, K43, K76, K99/R00

eRA system validations will check whether applicants have ORCID iDs and applications will not be accepted unless an ORCID iD is linked to the PD/PI's eRA Commons Personal Profile.

University Updates
SPAA Restructure
Sponsored Projects Award Administration (SPAA) is currently in the process of restructuring our account assignments based on constituency in order to create more efficiency within SPAA, and to provide a higher level of customer service to the Principal Investigators (PIs) and research community we are currently serving.

Starting in February, we will transition our team away from the traditional Sponsor classification to a Constituencies model currently followed by Proposal Administration, Grants/Awards & Contracts/Agreements. These changes will improve the quality of services, increase efficiency, streamline the communication process between Colleges/Departments and have an overall positive impact on your relationship with SPAA.

Please be certain to visit with us at the Association of Research Administrator’s Information Fair that will be held on Tuesday, January 28, 2020, from 10:00 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. in the RPL 1.302B in order to receive additional information.

As we transition our team, updates will be posted on our OSP website.  If you have any questions or concerns regarding these changes, please feel free to contact Linda Haster, Associate Director, directly or also feel free to send your inquires to SPAA@austin.utexas.edu.
