Virtual Tables Update
Feedback from a First Virtual Table Meeting
In December, we had the first meeting of a CTEWC Virtual Table. Co-chaired by Jim Keenan and Dan Fleming, the table is composed of theological ethicists from around the world who will be presenting at a conference in Rome next year which is focusing on the issue of sexual abuse in the Church, and will be charting new terrain in responses from theological ethicists and systematic theologians. The Virtual Table is providing the presenters with an opportunity to share the development of their ideas and proposals before the conference, which will act to stimulate the thinking of participants.

As the first Virtual Table, the meetings of this first small group are being used to test technology and methodology of the Virtual Table initiative. Based on these learnings, this and other virtual tables will become open to the whole CTEWC network in 2020.

Announcing a New Virtual Table
The Virtual Table Nonviolence and Just Peace, co-chaired by Eli McCarthy (US) and Jasmin Nario-Galace (Philippines), is inviting new participants. Interested participants can apply to the organizers by January 22.

New Book

Based on Catholic and Confucian social ethics, this book develops an ethic of solidarity and reciprocity with the migrants in Asia who are marginalized. Mary Mee-Yin Yuen draws off her own pastoral experiences in the Church, the situation of the wider Christian community, and the personal experiences of migrant women from various Asian countries in Hong Kong, to describe the features and practices of an ethical approach that emphasizes solidarity and reciprocity. Interdisciplinary in nature, this book integrates Catholic social ethics, moral philosophy, Chinese Confucian ethics, social sciences, and cultural studies to investigate the phenomenon of international and intra-national migration in Asia, particularly with regard to women migrants moving from South Asia, Southeast Asia, and Mainland China to Hong Kong.

Padre Juan Carlos Scannone

Humanity in Crisis: Ethical and Religious Response to Refugees, David Hollenbach, S.J. (Georgetown University Press)

The major humanitarian crises of recent years are well known: the Shoah, the killing fields of Cambodia, the Rwandan genocide, the massacre in Bosnia, and the tsunami in Southeast Asia, not to mention bloody conflicts in South Sudan, Syria, and Afghanistan. Millions have been killed and many millions more have been driven from their homes; the number of refugees and internally displaced persons has reached record levels. Could these crises have been prevented? Why do they continue to happen? This book seeks to understand how humanity is in crisis, and what we can do about it. Hollenbach draws on the values that have shaped major humanitarian initiatives over the past century and a half, such as the commitments of the International Committee of the Red Cross, Oxfam, Doctors without Borders, as well as the values of diverse religious traditions, including Catholicism, to examine the scope of our responsibilities and practical solutions to these global crises. He also explores the economic and political causes of these tragedies, and uncovers key moral issues for both policy makers and for practitioners working in humanitarian agencies and faith communities.

US-Mexico Border Conference
In addition, a group of CTWC ethicists is working towards a conference that would take place on the border of USA and Mexico in the light of continuing migration and refugee crises. Ramon Luzarraga (US) and Jutta Battenberg (Mexico) are leading the planning committee.  During the most recent AAR meeting in San Diego, Ramon and Victor Carmona crossed the border and visited the Tijuana campus of the Jesuit Universidad Iberoamericana as a probable site for the conference. We will keep you updated about these efforts as planning continues.
