A new decade in Swarthmore kicks off with SRA's New Year's Day 5K Race!

Register for the New Year's Day 5K Race
Kick off Swarthmore Recreation Association's 80th year by participating in the annual New Year's Day 5K and Kids' Races on Wednesday, January 1st.
The race
starts at 10:30 am and winds through Swarthmore in a flat and fast course that ends with a lap at the college track. Kids' races, also on the college track, start at about 11:30 am for children ages 2 through 13.
Regular pre-registration through noon December 31 is $25, and the race-day registration fee is $30.
Race-day registration starts at 9 am at Swarthmore College's Lamb-Miller Field House.
Checks or cash preferred - no credit cards accepted day-of.

Gallery on Park's featured artist for January is Philadelphia artist, Barbara Mayfield. Graduating from the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, Barbara works in oil & acrylic on canvas, paper on panel, and monotype.
Her work has been represented by fine galleries in Philadelphia, Washington DC, Stamford CT, and Santa Fe NM and now Swarthmore! She was also a mural painter for the Philadelphia Museum of Art Community Programs Department.
Ring in your new year by joining us on Friday, January 3 from 6-8 pm for the opening reception of her wonderful and colorful work.

"Landscapes Imagined" from the Swarthmore Friends of the Arts
A new art exhibit in Swarthmore Borough Hall is coming in January! Swarthmore Friends of the Arts is pleased to present "Landscapes Imagined" by Cynthia Murray.
It will be on display from January 3 through January 29. The exhibit is free and open to the public.
Cynthia began her creative pursuits during childhood when she and her five siblings would create summer craft projects under their mother's direction. Eventually conquering skills more complex than gluing greeting cards to scrap pieces of wood, she began to understand how art could be an effective way to communicate ideas that often felt too complex for words, a way to tell her story. Combining that appreciation for art with a love for mathematics and science led her to study landscape architecture at Rutgers University and the University of Illinois.
Designing a wide variety of landscapes throughout the United States as well as international locations often left Cynthia frustrated when construction documents were turned over to teams of contractors. Wanting to be a more active participant when her dreams imagined shifted to physical reality, her frustration led to a search for outlets to develop an idea and follow through to a finished product, crafted by her own hands.
Painting has become a way for Cynthia to interpret the world, not necessarily how she sees it, but how she feels it. "I find the challenge and the goal is to capture the emotional essence of any subject with a unique style that is hopefully both captivating and thought-provoking."
Her award-winning paintings have been exhibited in numerous galleries and art centers in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Delaware.

Video Lecture Series: History of the Islamic Golden Age

The Islamic Golden Age was one of the most remarkable periods of scholarly achievement and cultural flourishing in human history. Covering the years from approximately 750-1250, the advancements made during this period are akin to the blossoming of wisdom in ancient Greece, or the later European Renaissance. Like ancient Greece and the European Renaissance, the Islamic Golden Age was made possible by a happy coincidence of politics, patronage, and great minds. Refreshments will be served.
