Working as a Spanish Specialist at PLC means a lot of things. Put simply, we are the bilingual facilitators. We translate youth and adult resources from English into Spanish, we facilitate youth and adult programs in Spanish, we adapt bilingual programs to meet the needs of multilingual groups-the list goes on. Most importantly, we use our language skills to bring PLC's mission to fruition for Spanish-speaking community members.

 

PLC's mission is to support communities in redefining peace through equity, justice and the implementation of innovative practices.

 

Speaking in Spanish allows us to appropriately serve Spanish-speaking communities domestically and internationally. We serve adult groups, official Spanish immersion schools, as well as schools that have any number of Spanish speaking students. At the beginning of the 2019-2020 school year, we were able to provide schools with bilingual (Spanish/English) resources for the first time. This means that now we serve youth and adults more effectively by offering bilingual calm kits, bilingual SEL (social-emotional learning) lessons, bilingual restorative circles, and bilingual peace literature.

 

Sometimes we enter English-speaking classrooms and there are a few students who only speak Spanish. We help students understand the purpose of our programs by talking to them in Spanish. They tend to break past that "wall" of being timid or afraid to talk to facilitators because they don't know we know Spanish until we make it known. This kind of relationship-building is powerful. We have one-on-one conversations with these students and share our bilingual resources so they can participate in the lessons with their classmates-and their English-speaking classmates often learn some Spanish vocabulary in the process.

 

We also facilitate restorative conversations bilingually. We have facilitated conversations in English, in Spanish, and in a mix of both languages to meet the needs of the participants. Our ability to simultaneously translate and facilitate is helpful for resolving conflicts.

 

It is the goal of everyone at PLC to make peace education accessible to all people of all ages, and that is what we continue to do as Spanish Specialists!

Trabajando como Especialistas de Español en el Peace Learning Center significa mucho. Simplemente, somos los facilitadores bilingües. Traducimos recursos del inglés al español para jóvenes y adultos, facilitamos programas en español para jóvenes y adultos, adaptamos programas bilingües para satisfacer las necesidades de los grupos multilingües-y la lista continua. Lo más importante es que usamos nuestras habilidades lingüísticas para realizar el objetivo del Peace Learning Center para los miembros de la comunidad hispanohablante.

Hablando español nos permite servir la comunidad hispanohablante nacional e internacional. Servimos grupos de adultos, escuelas de inmersión, así como escuelas que tienen cualquier número de estudiantes que hablan español. Esto significa que ahorapodemos servir adultos y jóvenes de manera más efectiva, ofreciendo kits de calma, lecciones del aprendizaje social, círculos restaurativos y lecturas, todo esto en sistema bilingüe.

 

Hay ocasiones en las que los salones tienen la mayoría de los estudiantes que hablan inglés y unos cuantos que solo hablan español. Nosotros ayudamos a que los estudiantes entiendan el propósito de nuestros programas hablándoles en español. Ellos tienden derrumbar ese "murro" de timidez o miedo de hablar con los facilitadores porque no saben que nosotros hablamos español hasta que se los hacemos saber. Este modo de construir relaciones es poderoso. Tenemos conversaciones uno-a-uno con estos estudiantes y compartimos nuestros recursos bilingües para que ellos puedan participar en las lecciones con sus compañeros-y sus compañeros que solo hablan inglés generalmente aprenden más español durante el proceso.

 

Nosotros también facilitamos conversaciones restaurativas bilingües. Hemos facilitado conversaciones en inglés, en español, y una mezcla de los dos idiomas para satisfacer las necesidades de los participantes. Nuestra habilidad de traducir y facilitar simultáneamente es útil para resolver los conflictos.
