Day 6: World Music

Destination: World Peace!

Map WorldPeace

Fun Facts:   On many tours, especially ones lasting quite a few days (and 80 is more than a few days!), tour directors often give participants a "Day on your Own."  Folks on the tour can choose to nap and rest, relax in a chair and read, or go explore a market or visit other historical or tourist sites on their own.  That's what you have today on this "tour" - a day on your own.  Well, not quite on your own. We're giving you a musical break.

Art Form:  Putumayo World Music
For years we have featured the world music CDs of Putumayo World Music. Since they are all about bringing
us the sights, sounds and cultures from around the world, it has always been a perfect fit for World's Window.

Putumayo began in 1975 when Dan Storper traveled to Colombia, South America and found himself in the Putumayo river valley where he fell in love with the indigenous handicrafts, people, and countryside.

In 1991, on a visit to Golden Gate Park he happened upon an African band named Kotoja - who was performing upbeat Afro-beat music to a happy, dancing crowd. That chance occurrence inspired Dan to start the Putumayo World Music record label with his friend Michael Kraus in 1993. For the past 25 years, Putumayo World Music has become known for its joyful compilations of international music.

The company's commitment to helping communities in the countries where the music originates led to the label contributing more than half a million dollars to non-profit organizations around the world.

For today's "Day on your Own" we've chosen 2 CDs:

"World Peace"A celebration of efforts by artists and statesmen seeking a more peaceful world.

PWM WorldPeaceCD

Putumayo released World Peace on June 14th, 2019. It was inspired by President John Fitzgerald Kennedy, Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr. and other 1960s leaders' search for peace and justice.

World Peace features renowned artists Jackson Browne, Nina Simone, Keb' Mo', India.Arie, Richard Bona, David Broza, Wyclef Jean, the international collective Playing for Change, and others who have been committed to writing and recording songs of peace and freedom.

Putumayo generously shared the music video of the song "One" performed by India.Arie on the World Peace album.
Turn your volume up a bit. Plug in your ear phones if that's how you want to hear it. Join us on this Sunday break to hear the sounds of Indian rhythms and words about how we all are one.

A portion of the sales from the  World Peace  album is donated to their featured partner,   The  National Peace Corps Association (NPCA).

African BeatAfrican beats and Western rhythms unite on these contemporary tunes from Cape Town to Bamako.

PWM AfricanBeatCD

This CD reveals that even in this globalized, hi-tech world, the divide between the past and the future is not as great as it may seem.  Songs by musicians with deep connections to their roots, including Les Barons, are remixed and reworked by Western DJs. The music of Senegal's Lëk Sèn reveals how hip-hop, electronica and other urban musical styles have been incorporated into traditional African music, taking it in surprising new directions.

Enjoy your "Day on you Own" today. We have big, LONG travel plans for tomorrow, so rest up!

I had not heard the song "One" before. Or perhaps it has played in our store and I didn't stop long enough to really pay attention to the words. Somehow listening to it several times on Saturday and now again today, it seemed a perfect "meditation" for these 2 days when people of many faiths celebrate their different and common worship traditions. I hope you are learning some new information as we travel along.  If you haven't already done so, invite some friends to come along! There's still room on this journey!

Do you journal? Today might be a good time to get your "Trip Journal" caught up.  Click here if you want to review where we've been in the last 5 days.
