UPdate from the UP for Learning Team
April 26, 2020
“We can go back to “normal” — gladly throwing this unsettling, uncomfortable, and scary time far into the past. Or, we can take action on transforming our education system, so (pandemic or no pandemic) we can stop leaving millions of young people unsupported and marginalized and instead, enable every single child in this country to be valued and empowered to lead unique, meaningful, and fulfilling lives.”
-Kelly Young, Education Reimagined
This article , written by Kelly Young (President of Education Reimagined and member of UP’s Executive Director Advisory Council), articulates the theme of my conversations over the past weeks, both professionally and as a parent.  Normal was an antiquated system created in the 19th century that was designed to measure all young people, as if they were the same.  Normal was a system that measured equity based on the moving targets of outcomes.  Normal was a system that allowed us to believe that learning only takes place in a building with rooms and desks. The challenges presented by COVID might just be our greatest opportunity to reimagine our educational system to one that is learner-centered and personalized based on each learners’ strengths and interests.

I am excited to share a new resource for designing engaging learning opportunities during COVID , created by UP for Learning and our partner, Shelburne Farms , as part of our year-long program, Cultivating Pathways to Sustainability.  This was designed with the idea that, during this challenging time, we are also seeing the power of the change-making movement. It’s time to reimagine a new norm, engage young people as change-making citizens in the solution, and build a new future through collaboration (peer to peer and beyond). UP and Shelburne Farms have created this resource for learners and educators and we hope that you will see how the infusion of personalization, project-based learning and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals can create powerful learning.

Here at UP, we are humbled by the interest (both in VT and globally!) in our 2020 Power 2 Summit: Youth & Adults Transforming Schools Together **A Virtual Event!** on May 15, 2020 from 9 am -12 pm. Our goal is for everyone to see, hear, and feel the power of youth voice and youth-adult partnership in learning and decision-making. We hope you will join us and learn about tools and strategies that can be used in our homes, communities, schools, and organizations to make learning meaningful. We hope you will register for this free and inspiring event!

I hope you have a healthy week and that you will join me in reimagining the possibilities so that all young people can thrive.

With gratitude,

Lindsey
