A Night With The Master Distiller of Jack Daniels
Jeff Arnett

Neur o Assistance Foundation was proud to host Jeff Arnett, Master Distiller of Jack Daniels Whiskey, for dinner and a whiskey tasting  at Pappas Bros. Steakhouse on September 24, 2019. Jeff shared his story of how he transitioned from a young graduate with an engineering degree to the Master Distiller of one of the country's most renowned whiskeys. He went on to educate the audience on how Jack Daniels whiskey is processed and what makes it so unique. I am now eager to make a trip to the distillery so I can take the tour and see the spring fed water that is an essential ingredient in each barrel of Jack Daniels whiskey.

As for food, you can't beat Pappas Bros. Steakhouse! Our menu featured chicken, salmon, or steak. The salmon was fresh and tender, melting in your mouth with every bite. The steak was topped with a specially made Jack Daniels whiskey sauce. Certainly no one left hungry and I am sure many left eager to return for another delicious meal!

Neuro Assistance asked Jeff to select one barrel for us to bottle for fundraising. The barrel he picked is considered his personal collection and is 1 in 1,000 of the overall barrels. One hundred and twenty bottles were given out that night but we do have bottles left which you can get for a $100 donation. Information on getting your bottle is below. You can't find a better holiday gift for the whiskey lover in your life!

Take Some Time For Yourself

From David Zurfluh, PVA National President

I recently read a nice article written by Mr. Zurfluh where he encourages us to take some time for ourselves. Here are a few snippets for you to consider as you move into the holiday season:
"As adults in today's world... we're constantly setting expectations, trying to keep up with the Joneses. We get involved with so many different things entailing our jobs, social media and personal goals that we often forget the importance of personal reflection and contemplation on where we fit in the grand scheme of things... I suggest finding a day or two or a weekend to get away from it all, from work and everything else in your life that demands your time and energy, to reflect and contemplate on who you are and where you're going" David goes on to suggest a short list of self-care options for your "me-retreat":
  1. Schedule time to pray, meditate, reflect and contemplate on your inner self.
  2. Say "no" to others and "yes" to you; treat yourself with the gift of time.
  3. Exercise, move around and do something physical
  4. Go outside and enjoy the change of seasons; take a day trip somewhere.
  5. Cook at home and use a new recipe you've been wanting to try.
  6. Organize and balance your mind, body, work and home life schedules.
  7. Read a self-care book or watch a video.
Give it a try and enjoy this upcoming festive holiday season. :)

WAGS is "women who have partners with spinal cord injuries. When everyone else goes home to their own lives, we are the ones that are still there. Our unique caregiver/lover dynamic can only be truly understood by others like us. We are creating a strong network of women around the world supporting other women who are dealing with this injury alongside their men".

These women work to build a community through FaceBook, Instagram, YouTube and in-person meet-ups. They "know the importance of getting together and talking about your story, because so much of [the] world is online and [they] just value face-to-face communication and that sisterhood connection that can only from meet[ing] someone in person".

If you are a woman dating or married to a man with spinal cord injuries I would encourage you to check out their website. They can be found at WAGSOFSCI.COM

Seems to me there might be a need for an ambassador in DFW!

Making an Impact
Have you used your personal experience with SCI to make an impact in your community? You may often feel that you don't have the time, resources, or voice to make an impact. Perhaps you don't think too much about it at all.

My husband received a spinal cord injury nearly seven years ago. The last three and a half years I have been working in the Legal Department of a large hospitality company. My company owns and/or franchises over 1,500 motels across the USA and my department has the privilege of contributing to the training of every new General Manager at each property. As a colleague of mine worked to update sections of the training she asked me about my experiences with ADA rooms at hotels I have stayed at with my husband. I let her know that one frustration is the shower. Often times the shower head/handle is left so high that my husband is not able to adjust it to shower independently. She then began training all GM's to keep shower heads and handles low after cleaning the rooms, so future guests that may be in a wheelchair would be able to access them.

I was impressed by how quickly she implemented my feedback. I consider how this could have a positive impact on many other people for years to come! Consider your community and how you can make suggestions that might result in big impacts for others with disabilities. :)

Client Testimonies
A Note From Matt...

"Thank you for all that you [...] have done for my family. The lift has been a life changing addition to our daily routine and could not have come at a better time now that we are expecting our first child, a little girl, in February. The lift has allowed my wife to remove the strain and stress of transferring me from my wheelchair manually and has benefited us greatly during the pregnancy. [...] I could not be happier with the result and truly appreciate all that you do. Thank you!"
Matt, age 31

We Need Your Help

Donate ~ Sponsor ~ Volunteer

Your $25 donation will help provide clean catheters to a paralyzed child for one month when their insurance won't cover the expense.

Your $100 donation will help build a wheelchair ramp so we can get our clients out of rehab and through their front door at home.

Your $200 donation will help widen the doorways in their homes so their wheelchair can fit through the bathroom door. Insurance doesn't covers home modifications.

Your $500 donation will help provide life-changing medical equipment: wheelchairs and specialized shower chairs, etc. Most insurance only covers a small part of wheelchairs, if any, and no "bathing aids" are covered.

No donation is too small. Click here for more information.
