Benefactor's Day
Reported by Mrs. Katia Tavitian

Last Sunday November 10th, a commemorative and celebratory happening marked the annual calendar of events at St. Sarkis Church: Benefactors' Day.

It is an endearing occasion for which a special Hokehankisd is held annually, to honor and remember with prayers and thankfulness all the late benefactors of our church and community, most notably and namely, our beloved Suzanne and Hovsep Hagopian, the benefactors of our Saint Sarkis  Saturday School.

The special requiem service was highlighted by the Saturday School students , parents and staff,  along with the Sunday School students, holding candles and raising their hearts and minds to God in prayers for the souls of our dear benefactors Suzanne and Hovsep.

Der Nareg spoke beautifully , stressing the importance of giving in our Christian faith, and  extending a vote of thanks to the beloved  late Hagopian couple. He depicted them as the angels sent from God in the most dire time of need to answer our prayers and help our church.

Following the church services, a special Hokejash took place in the main hall of the church , where a bountiful feast of sweet and savory delights was  generously  prepared and donated by our Ladies Guild and Saturday School PTA parents, and enjoyed by all the attendees.

The celebration  was impeccably  coordinated and organized by our church treasurer Mrs Alina Kochoumian, for whom we extend our sincere appreciation and gratitude.

May God bless each and every charitable heart, for it encompasses the highest and purest form of love!
Salt & Light Youth Group
Reported by Ms. Arev Mouradian

With much anticipation Salt and Light was in full force this past Friday night. It is such a beautiful sight as a bystander to see our Armenian youth coming together and joining as one. The mission of Salt and Light is prospering and it benefits us all. Our community is thriving under our youth and they are learning what it is to not only be an Armenian but also a Christian. May you all one day have the pleasure of seeing this first hand.
Sunday School
On Sunday, November 10th forty energetic and eager to learn, about Gods word, children attend Sunday School.  The lesson taught this Sunday was about "How the  Armenian Alphabet helped us grow closer to God."

After our lesson all of the children attended church service and took part in the holy communion.

The older Sunday School students participated in a requiem service, by holding candles in remembrance of the late Suzanne & Hovsep Hagopian, who were the founders of St. Sarkis Armenian Language Saturday School.

We invite parents and children to join us for our annual Thanksgiving Feast on Sunday, November 24th!

THE EPISTLE OF ST. PAUL TO THE PHILIPPIANS (1.1-11)
Paul and Timothy, servants of Christ Jesus,
To all the saints in Christ Jesus at Philippi, together with the overseers and deacons:
Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
I thank my God every time I remember you. In all my prayers for all of you, I always pray with joy because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now, being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.
It is right for me to feel this way about all of you, since I have you in my heart; for whether I am in chains or defending and confirming the gospel, all of you share in God's grace with me. God can testify how I long for all of you with the affection of Christ Jesus.
And this is my prayer: that your love may abound more and more in knowledge and depth of insight, so that you may be able to discern what is best and may be pure and blameless until the day of Christ, filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ-to the glory and praise of God.

THE GOSPEL OF JESUS CHRIST ACCORDING TO LUKE (9:44-50)
While everyone was marveling at all that Jesus did, he said to his disciples, "Listen carefully to what I am about to tell you: The Son of Man is going to be betrayed into the hands of men." But they did not understand what this meant. It was hidden from them, so that they did not grasp it, and they were afraid to ask him about it.
An argument started among the disciples as to which of them would be the greatest. Jesus, knowing their thoughts, took a little child and had him stand beside him. Then he said to them, "Whoever welcomes this little child in my name welcomes me; and whoever welcomes me welcomes the one who sent me. For he who is least among you all-he is the greatest."
"Master," said John, "we saw a man driving out demons in your name and we tried to stop him, because he is not one of us."

Liturgical Calendar (From Crossroads: E-Newsletter of the Armenian Prelacy)
THE HOLY APOSTLES ANDREW AND PHILIP
The word apostle refers to the special inner circle of Jesus' disciples, chosen by Jesus to accompany Him during His ministry, to learn from Him, follow His instructions and continue his work.

This Saturday, November 16, the Armenian Church celebrates two Holy Apostles, Andrew and Philip. Andrew was a Galilean fisherman and the first-called of the followers of Christ, along with his brother Simon, who was later called Peter. Philip was from Bethsaida and after he had been called to be an apostle he brought in Nathanael (later called Bartholomew).

PAREGENTAN OF THE FAST OF ADVENT
This Sunday, November 17, is the Eve (Paregentan) of the Fast of Advent (Hisnag). This is a weeklong fast (Monday to Friday) leading up to the first Sunday of Advent, which is next Sunday, November 24.

Advent is the period that guides us to the birth and baptism of Christ. It begins fifty days before January 6. Advent is intended to be a solemn and quiet time for prayer, reflection, and meditation in preparation for the mystery of the incarnation.

Traditionally the entire fifty-day period of Advent was a period of fasting. Now there are three weeklong fasts during Advent (along with the regular fasting days of Wednesday and Friday). The three week-long fasts are known as: The Fast of Advent (Hisnagats Bahk); The Fast of St. James (Sourp Hagopah Bahk); and the Fast of the Nativity (Dznuntyan Bahk).

Also commemorated this week:
Thursday, November 14: Sts. Gurias, Samonas, Abibas the Deacon, Romanus the Monk, and
Confessor Youth, Hesychius the Soldier.
