Summer's over, the leaves are changing, and we are in full swing in all of our adult and family literacy programs. Even though fall has just begun, we are already thinking ahead to spring and our 29th Annual Community Spelling Bee! We'll "bee" kicking off our preparations for the Bee, scheduled for March 24 at Marist, with a planning committee meeting on October 15 at 10 am in our Poughkeepsie office. If you are well-organized, well-connected, and willing to help with the n-u-m-e-r-o-u-s and d-i-v-e-r-s-e activities that go into making the Bee a success, we'd love to have you join us! Email

Book Buddies, Classroom Book Buddies, and Math Buddies getting underway
Schools have been in session for almost a month now, and the teachers and students have been getting to know each other. Over the next few weeks, our Book Buddies and Math Buddies programs will be matching volunteers with elementary school students and classrooms for extra reading or math practice. These wonderful volunteers will be providing support and encouragement for children who need a little extra time and practice to become proficient in these critical skills.
We are in search of additional Book Buddies volunteers, especially in the Newburgh, Beacon, and eastern Dutchess areas (Pawling, Dover, Webutuck, and Pine Plains school districts). If you love to read and can commit to an hour a week during the school day to help a child learn to love reading too, please contact Judy Connolly
by email
or at 845-452-8670.

About a month ago, we sent out an appeal for donations to help cover a funding gap in our Book Buddies budget. We hoped for enough response to come close to covering a $2,500 shortfall. And boy, did you respond! We are thrilled to report that, thanks to your generosity, we raised over $2,700 as of October 1st! Every time we received a donation, it just melted our hearts to see how much you support this program. Thank you so, so much!

Student finds success with one-on-one tutoring
Literacy Connections tutors can help their students develop the skills they need to get better jobs, and to be successful in those new jobs. Here's a story we received in August from Hudson area tutor Gregor about an English Language Learner:
"My student P. had been coming to group classes for several years, but last fall he began individual sessions. He is very motivated. By June this year he had moved from Best Literacy Level 3 to Level 4. He has also particularly wanted to improve his conversation skills. He has a good ear for pronunciation and conversational phrases. He’s had a steady job cooking in a restaurant, but recently began looking for a new job with a better location and hours. On his own initiative, he went and spoke face-to-face with some restaurant owners about employment. In July he was successful and found a better job. He has completed a few probationary weeks and can continue in the new position. He is still on good terms with his previous boss. Now P. is learning important new English idioms used by his colleagues in the fast-paced kitchen of his new workplace."
Congratulations, P., on your hard work and success, and to Gregor for focusing on P.'s individual needs in the tutoring sessions!
