Welcome to another issue of what we hope is amusing and educational content from the staff at Osher Marin JCC. Coincidentally, most articles have global origins. Look for Israel, France, Germany, China—and one very iconic American staple.

Growing Up Below Sea Level:
A Kibbutz Childhood
Wednesday, April 29 @ 1pm
In honor of Yom Ha'atzmaut (Israel's Independence Day), join us next week for a special lunchtime author talk with local author, social worker, and former Osher Marin JCC Director of Community Education,
Rachel Biale
.
Growing Up Below Sea Level: A Kibbutz Childhood
, tells the quintessential story of Israel in the most intimate terms. Biale's memoir is organized into 26 stories that span her childhood -- from her earliest memories at age three to her departure from Israel to America at age twenty.
The Jewish Journal writes: "Biale’s book is not only a work of history and autobiography, but also a lens through which to view how profoundly Israel has changed since then...Biale is a gifted storyteller, and each episode in “Growing Up Below Sea Level” carries its own poignant charm."

Destination:
Le Mont-Saint-Michel, France
Let’s go to northwestern France to a historic and architectural gem perched on a rocky islet in the midst of vast sandbanks exposed to powerful tides between Normandy and Brittany. Le Mont-Saint-Michel
—a Gothic-style Benedictine abbey and the village that grew up in its shadow
—and the bay around it have been listed as UNESCO
World Heritage Sites since 1979.
Built during the 11th–16th centuries, the abbey is a technical and artistic tour de force, having had to adapt to the problems posed by this unique natural site.

Yom Ha'Zikaron: Israel's Memorial Day
The week after the nation of Israel joins the rest of the world in honoring the memory of those who perished in the Holocaust, Israelis pause for
Yom Ha'Zikaron
. It's celebrated on the fourth of Iyar which this year is the evening of April 27th through sundown on April 28th.
In the US, the vast majority of us
celebrate rather than
observe Memorial Day, staging picnics and barbecues, and perhaps eating and drinking too much.
By contrast, on Israel's Memorial Day, Yom Ha'Zikaron, a siren is sounded and the entire nation comes to a halt for a moment of silence.
Even on the freeways, cars pull over and those inside stand to honor Israel's veterans, fallen soldiers, and Israeli civilians killed by acts of terrorism. It's deeply personal because everyone knows someone who died while serving in the IDF.
As if to limit the pain of memory, the very next day Israelis celebrate
Yom Ha'Atsmaut, Israeli Independence Day. It's a reminder of why so many lives have been lost and a visceral prompt to value all that the modern state of Israel is and will become.

Daniel Hope offers a musical antidote.
The New Century Chamber Orchestra (NCCO) and the JCC’s Performing Arts Department both began presenting in 1992, with NCCO making our JCC their North Bay home. We are proud to have presented them every season since then.
Daniel Hope took the role of Artistic Partner and concertmaster for New Century at the beginning of the 2017-2018 season, bringing new leadership and his signature vibrancy to the orchestra.
I hope you were able to attend the phenomenal, sold-out, and moving concert/film presentation in January, with Daniel and NCCO musicians partnering with Violins of Hope, the Center for Jewish Peoplehood, and Kanbar Center.
During this time of shutdown, he invites artists into his home in Berlin for music as an antidote to this period of lockdown and crisis.
Take a virtual visit to Daniel’s home for a special visit and this intimate, extraordinary gift of music.

And, yeah, it does teach the kiddos about specificity, which is essential for critical thinking and written communication—but, hey, this is really just a fun game. So gather up the makings, enlist your family, and good luck out there!

Paint with household spices!
Last issue we made scented playdough. This time, we discover another olfactory opportunity: spices make great paints! This is a fun activity to introduce the rich colors, smells, tastes, and textures that have always been a gift for the palate and the palette. Have fun!
