Melanie Steilen, RN, BSN, ACRN (she/her)
President, ANAC Board of Directors
Director of Nursing Education, CAI Global
Years as an ANAC member: 25

What do you hope to achieve during your time as president of ANAC's Board of Directors?

Over the next two years, I will focus on expanding our global footprint and forming sustainable partnerships with schools of nursing, both in the United States and abroad. I will also examine the efficiency of the board of directors and the nomination process to prioritize diversity and ensure effectiveness. We are already discussing ways we can work to ensure 100% alignment with ANAC's mission, values and strategic plan.

I have been a member of ANAC and an ACRN for 25 years and have witnessed the enormous paradigm shift in HIV prevention, care and treatment, as well as how ANAC has changed. During my tenure, I want to increase member engagement and expand funding streams to better support membership and activities. That's why we are creating two new board committees - a membership committee and development committee - to lead the charge on these initiatives. I also want to support and expand the work of our DEI committee and ensure we are practicing what we preach by offering trainings for members that support diversity, equity and inclusion in nursing and healthcare.

Being a member of ANAC and working in HIV all these years changed the trajectory of my life. I became a fierce advocate for those who were stigmatized and marginalized. I have learned to speak up for nurse and patient rights. That's a fight that continues to this day, and I'm proud to work with an organization like ANAC that advocates for nurses and the people they serve.

Most importantly, I want to lead with kindness. It is something we desperately need in this world, and I want our members and potential members to know my door is always open. Get involved. Run for a spot on our board. Make your voice heard. Become part of the ANAC family.

I'm excited to work with all of you and to guide this wonderful organization forward.
