Letter from the Co-Executive Directors
Dear Literacy Source Community,

Fall has arrived and we are excited for the school year. Our quarter has started off well as we have been hard at work to build robust online education for our adult learners. Thanks to your ongoing support, every student who wants to learn with Literacy Source has access to the technologies and staff support needed to make the leap to remote classes and tutoring. This is our third quarter of online learning, and many of our continuing students have already made substantial gains in digital literacy skills.

We are living through a time of introspection and change in our democratic institutions, and our students engage in these conversations. In addition to working on reading and listening skills, some ESOL classes are learning about the rights and responsibilities of all US residents, how voting works, and who has had the right to vote over time. The GED class is working on writing an evidence-based essay while exploring the development of democracy and the history of voting rights and suppression. We are also having conversations with our instructors and volunteers about how to create instructional space to talk about and build skills around tough topics. As we work to get out the vote (see below), our students are civically active in their classes and communities.

We are excited to collaborate in our new Co-Executive Director model to move the agency ahead through these unique times. We look forward to getting to know our broad Literacy Source community and continue making our student-centered learning model accessible to all.

Best Wishes,

ESOL 4/5 Class Over Zoom
Fall Term is Off to a Great Start

"Fall has been an exciting term so far. We have several new students and many returning students. People are becoming quite familiar with Zoom and logging in is going more smoothly. We are learning about voting in America, some common irregular and regular verbs, and words in sentences that indicate time (during, after, while, etc.). We have watched videos on the Electoral College and the history of voting in America. We also read an article about Kanye West's bid for the Presidency. I can't wait to hear from students about how leaders are chosen in other countries."

  • Putnam and Groudine Family Fund for a generous contribution that provided students with Chromebooks, WiFi, internet hotspots, and staff support for remote learning.
