Welcome to the Parks & Recreation Roundup, a bi-monthly publication aimed at
keeping the community informed on our programs, events, and partnerships
DEPARTMENT HIGHLIGHTS
Help Support Local Youth
With the current success and demand for the youth activity kits (aka Busy Bags), the City of Steamboat Springs has partnered with the Boys & Girls Club on this project. Each organization will take turns buying materials and distributing the bags each week. Funding for this project is limited, so anyone interested in making a donation, can do so by visiting the B&GC donation page and clicking on the Busy Bag link.
Trail Ambassadors Needed
Routt County Riders is currently seeking a handful of friendly Yampa Valley trail users interested in serving as volunteer Trail Ambassadors this summer and fall. Each volunteer will commit to ride, run or hike 10-15 days per season on the multi-use trails in, and around, Steamboat Springs. Those interested should be regular trail users, be familiar with the area, and feel comfortable interacting with all trail users.
Haymaker Happenings
Although the golf course is still closed due to winter conditions, preparations for a May opening are in the works, weather and public health orders permitting. Staff has been working hard to adapt operations to accommodate several potential scenarios. When, and to what capacity the course will be opened is still undetermined, but guests can expect modifications and changes to typical course operations.
Keeping Our Wildlife Wild
The first signs of spring bear activity have been observed, and the city asks that you be "bear aware", and take several easy steps to help keep our wildlife where they belong - in the wild. Take the extra time to secure your trash can and use the bear bar on dumpsters. When possible, keep your trash inside. Also, clean up items around your home, such as pet food and bird feeders, to help limit issues down the road.
NRPA Snapshot Survey Results
Last week, the National Recreation and Park Association sent out a survey to thousands of departments throughout the country, asking for information on current closures, programs and staffing. Results from that survey were posted this week, and provide a great snapshot, and the latest data, on how park and recreation leaders across the country are confronting the COVID-19 pandemic.
Recreating During COVID-19
With the numerous state and local public health orders in place, we know it can be confusing trying to navigate what each of these orders mean for outdoor recreation. This quick guide to outdoor recreation will hopefully help guide your decision making during this time. We highly encourage you to get outside for your mental and physical well being, just remember to Stay Local, Stay Safe and Stay Healthy!
