Kindervelt's 50th Jubilee
Celebrating 50 years of Making a Difference
In 1971 Cincinnati Children's Development Director, Willard Baily enlisted the help of board member Barbara Robinson to form an auxiliary to support CCHMC. They gathered together a very energetic group of women and Kindervelt began.

This year we will celebrate those humble beginnings and 50 years of "Making a Difference", culminating with our Fall Event, "Kindervelt's 50th Jubilee" in October.

I have started planning and forming my committee. If anyone would like to join us or has any suggestions, please forward them onto me. We will be rolling out more information and an official 50th year logo soon.

From the President
In 1971 a gallon of gas cost 40 cents, a United States postage stamp cost 8 cents, Richard Nixon was President, Disney World opened its doors, and a great organization was born called Kindervelt-German for “children’s world!” Yes, it’s hard to believe, but Kindervelt is 50 years old!  We have so much to celebrate: 50 years of enthusiastic efforts by hundreds of members serving the community and making a difference for the kids! How exciting! Let’s embrace this new year with all kinds of renewed energy to continue our mission along with some special celebrating. As we well know from our experiences this past year, nothing can stop us!

This winter is going to still be tough, especially since our option for outdoor activities will be on hiatus, but as we have seen so many times already, our groups continue to find ways to raise funds in new ways. I know it’s not ideal, nor easy, but it’s oh so worth it! Thank you for all you are doing big and small to assure we continue to thrive with our fulfilling work.

It's time for the annual New Year’s Resolutions…make this be the year you resolve to submit names to Ginny Myer, our Nominating Committee Chair, for consideration for Board of Trustees positions. That’s a resolution you can actually follow through on. Just send her an email at kvnomchair@kindervelt.org. Being a part of the BOT has been such an incredible experience for me being able to work with so many great friends from other groups! We would love to have you join the leadership team…consider it!

I wish you the happiest and healthiest New Year!!

Coping with Grief
By Tara Dale, LISW-S
Happy New Year and hello, 2021!

2020 was a challenging year for all of us but we made it through it! As we all begin to look forward to positive changes in the New Year, some children may experience some sadness and possible grief over losses from the past year. Losses can take many forms, such as loss of a loved one, suspended in-person school learning, cancelled activities and events, missed time with friends or not being able to visit a local park or zoo. Grief is normal and can’t necessarily be “fixed.” Everyone grieves in their own way and each person can learn how to cope with their grief effectively and build resiliency for the future.

Kids can show their grief in various ways including behavioral changes, mood changes (increased anxiety, sadness or anger), changes in sleep or eating patterns, and possibly with physical discomfort (stomachaches, headaches). There is no time limit for grief although there are helpful ways to support your child while working through their grief.

Be there to listen, provide support and reassurance to them. Encourage them to share their thoughts and feelings. Let them know their feelings are normal and allow them to express those feelings and cry, if needed. You can also help them brainstorm ideas for additional coping such as, finding new ways to reconnect as a family, expressing themselves through artwork, engaging in physical activities (such as yoga, sports, or going for a walk or run), listening to soothing music or writing in a journal. Normalcy can provide comfort when other areas of life feel out of control. So, encourage them to do their best to keep up with their normal routine.

If your child needs additional support, it may be helpful to seek counseling services. You can talk to their school about school-based services, search for local counselors/therapists at psychologytoday.com or call Cincinnati Children’s Psychiatric Intake Response Center (PIRC) at (513) 636-4124. If your child has experienced the death of a loved one, Fernside is a local non-profit organization that provides outreach, support and education to children during the grieving process. Fernside can be contacted at (513) 246-9140 or at fernside.org. If you have an immediate safety concerns for your child, you can always call 911, bring them to the nearest emergency department or call the PIRC for guidance.

Kindervelt Krafts would like to thank Santa, a.k.a. Keith Henize, who packed his sleigh to deliver KV Krafts to CHMC employees. We appreciated Santa’s help!
KV #30 "Cakes by Marie & Tina"

Our Holiday baking event “Cakes by Marie and Tina” was a Great success. This was due to the support from a large number of our Kindervelt groups. We had many orders and Marie and Tina baked 16 cakes and over a thousand cookies, raising $700. Thank you, thank you, thank you to the many Kindervelters for their generous support of this event.
KV #22 Kudos to Sarah Bell and the street captains of the Montgomery Swaim neighborhood. The luminaria was gorgeous and the proceeds were the HIGHEST ever in over 20 years! Well done and the neighborhood was awash in warm candle light! We hear the remote control for an entire street of battery candles was a stunning experience to see them light all at once! Thank you for all your hard work!
KV #16 Linda Deters organized a "Light Up the Neighborhood" luminary event in her College Hill neighborhood. It was such a huge success that it may now become an annual event. It was something positive to share with neighbors after all the negative things that have been happening in our world and they even raised $450 for Kindervelt. Thank you, Linda, you're all about Kindervelt and Cincinnati Children's Hospital.
KV #78 organized successful holiday luminaries in 3 neighborhoods - Babson Park and Wayside Woods on December 13, and Ravens Run on December 20. Not only did we generate funds, approx. $1700., for KV, we helped create celebrations in a year when so many normal festivities were cancelled.
KV#56 would like to Thank Libby Baker and Sue Hammel for working the KV booth at Findlay Market. We sold crafts, candies and our own giant jelly bean packs. Libby also sold a KV Kids silver pendant. Our group is sending Blessings to all and wishes for a very Happy New Year.
KV #68 is so happy to announce that our member, Elaine Wilke, received the call we have all been praying for her to get a new kidney. She had surgery Sunday night, December 27 and everything is going well for her. She is out of ICU and in good spirits and would like to say a HUGE THANK YOU for all the prayers. Please continue to pray for Elaine that she continues to improve. There are a lot of steps for her body to accept the kidney. Continue to pray for Elaine and for the family that lost her kind donor. We are so blessed with our friends in Kindervelt.

KV#16 Our deepest sympathy to member Jan Beiersdorfer whose husband, Rich, passed away on December 5th after a lengthy illness. Rich was very supportive of Kindervelt and especially Kindervelt #16 events. Our love and support go out to his family and friends at this difficult time.

KV #22 Our sincerest condolences to Connie Bergen for the loss of her father on December 2. Mr. Mourad was 93 and passed after a brief illness.

KV #77 With deep condolences, we are sad to announce the passing of our group member, Janice Curran. Please keep her husband Doby and daughter Sam in your prayers.
KV #68 had a Virtual Christmas Party and most of our members participated. Everyone donated a gift, then we had some very nice elves that generously delivered them to everyone. We had a short business meeting and then each person opened their gift. It was a great night and brought joy and happiness to all in these difficult times! We even played a game that was fun.
