Interactive dining at Sumo & Smoh

Sumo and Smoh.jpg

If you are looking for a place to warm up this winter be sure to stop into Sumo & Smoh. Sou Moua’s (Sumo) and Salima Janmohamed’s (Smoh) delicious eats will warm your belly and the couple’s uplifting energy and kind presence will melt your heart.

The culinary couple initially met in Las Vegas. Salima likes to say “we are the only story that got out of Vegas.” Instead, after a long distance relationship, Salima came to the U.S. from Calgary, Ontario on a nursing work visa.

Being confined to the travel restrictions of a work visa helped the couple break out and try new places and tastes. Because they couldn’t travel internationally, they spent time exploring the United States. “We traveled the country – Florida, Disney, New York, and we got to see and learn beyond eating,” explains Salima.

Parks Conservancy Looking for Garden Stewards For Public Gardens

Saint Paul Parks Conservancy, in partnership with St. Paul Parks & Recreation, is inviting individuals or groups (families, schools, churches, clubs and others) to volunteer and to assist in the upkeep and general beautification of Saint Paul’s parks and trails.

GARDEN STEWARDS care for the many gardens in Saint Paul by planting, weeding, mulching and providing general garden maintenance. Volunteers tend the site as needed, with most (if not all) of the work occurring in non-snow months. After registering you will be contacted by Parks and Rec with further information on the garden space. The program provides trash bags, minimal garden tools, and garden gloves.

In the D10 Como neighborhood, they have an immediate need for three gardens:

  • The Circle Garden at Como Walk Bridge
  • Como Dockside Gardens
  • Nussbaumer Garden (Midway Parkway & Arona)

Explore the Nature of Winter at the Como Woodland

Saturday, February 19, 3-4:30pm

The Como Woodland Outdoor Classroom event has moved from this weekend to February 19 due to forecasted low temperatures. The temperature threshold they're looking for is above 20 degrees, so keep an eye on the weather, or just register below, if you're interested in attending.

Come to learn about the nature of winter at the Como Woodland Outdoor Classroom. Go on a scavenger hunt searching for animal tracks, learning to identify prairie plants and trees from clues left behind in the fall, and looking for winter birds – and then finish up with s’mores.

Start your adventure at the Kilmer Fireplace in the Como Woodland Outdoor Classroom at 1221 Wynne Ave., Saint Paul, MN in Como Park (just west of the Como Regional Park Pool).

Registration is not required, but it will help CWOC plan (and have enough snacks!) and allow them to contact you if plans change due to weather. Update will also be posted on the CWOC Facebook Page.

St. Paul 2022 Capital Improvement Budget Planning Kicks Off

The city uses the Capital Improvement Budget (CIB) to fund the construction of maintenance of City infrastructure - streets, bridges, libraries, parks, rec centers, and other public facilities. The budget is composed of a variety of funding sources.

CIB functions on a two year cycle, in odd calendar years projects are planned and proposed by city departments based on their 5-year plans. In even years, like 2022, the city recruits applications from the community for consideration by the CIB Committee. Selected ideas are incorporated into the following year's budget (usually proposed in mid-August). This year's CIB project priorities are ideas that incorporate Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED).

We're currently in the project development cycle, which includes the following key dates:

  • Deadline for submitting initial project ideas – February 15
  • City begins accepting full applications for CIB project proposals – February 28
  • Deadline for submitting full applications – March 25
  • Departments provide cost estimates for submitted projects – April 11
