Hopkins Foundation Project Award Applications:
During the fall of 2019, USD 253 staff members are invited to submit an application to the Hopkins Foundation to request funding for a NEW special classroom, area, organization, or group project that will benefit students. The deadline to apply is December 18, 2019. Click here for an application or they are also available at each school.


Print your W-2: Beginning  November 15, employees can elect to print out their own W-2 Wage and Tax Statements as well as their 1095C Employer-Provided Health Insurance Offer and Coverage forms through Skyward's Employee Access.   Click here for instructions and additional information Click here for a tutorialEmployees have until December 31 to make this selection.

Early Resignation/Retirement Notification Incentive: Any licensed teacher who has worked more than two years in USD 253 who is planning to resign or retire at the end of the school year is eligible to receive an early notification stipend. A written resignation or retirement notice must be submitted to the assistant superintendent of Human Resources. Stipends will be awarded according to the time table below at the end of the contract year.
Written notification received by:
  • December 1st would receive $500
  • January 1st would receive $250

9th Annual Walnut Turkey Day Dash: 
November 28, 2019, 7:30 a.m.

Seasonal Celebration: Emporia Public Schools will present the 84th annual Seasonal Celebration Dec. 11-12 in W.L. White Auditorium. The program will feature vocal and instrumental holiday music from around the world performed by students at Emporia Middle School and Emporia High School. The program begins at 7:00 p.m. Doors will open one hour before the performance begins. Admission will be $3 at the door for school-age children and adults. Preschool children will be admitted free. For more information about the program, call Mary Herbert Education Center at 341-2200.

The board presented a proclamation to Pete Leyva, a representative of ENEA in honor of American Education Week.

Board Recognition:
  • The board recognized Emporia High School senior Connor Hauff for being named a 2020 Commended National Merit Scholar.  The National Merit Scholarship Program is an academic competition for recognition and scholarships that began in 1955.  Approximately 1.5 million students enter the National Merit competition and each year only about 34,000 students are recognized for placing in the top 3%.
  • The board presented a proclamation to Pete Leyva,  a representative of ENEA in honor of American Education Week which will be celebrated next week, November 18-22, 2019.

Board Updates:
  • William Allen White Redesign:  Staff from William Allen White presented updates to the board on their current efforts in school redesign.  The staff shared the two major focuses for their students which includes student success skills and real-world application through project based learning. Additional initiatives include personalized learning, community partnerships, and communication with stakeholders. Each of these redesign concepts support the board goals and KESA principles for students learning.
  • Bond Election Totals:  Superintendent, Kevin Case, thanked everyone who had a part in the bond election process and the successful bond vote. Official results: 2,571 Yes (63.6%) and 1472 No (36.4%)
  • Issuance of Bonds:  Dustin Avey, Managing Director with Piper Jaffray outlined the proposed timeline for the board to follow as they prepare for the sale of bonds.  Interest rates could be locked-in during the next couple of weeks as interest rates continue to be near record lows. Once the board is ready to lock-in the rates a special board meeting will be held to finalize the process. Avey also shared that approximately $1.2 million dollars will be earned on the bond funds while they are waiting to be used. Those earnings will be able to be used for additional building projects.
  • Bond Next Steps and Updates: Zach Snethen from HTK Architects and Eric Woltje from McCown Gordan presented an overview of the short and long term post bond building design process components. This includes programming, schematic design, design development, construction documents, and construction administration. Each of these steps in the process will help to further develop, refine, and finalize the scope of the project and the budget.   Click here for presentation details
