Welcome to the September 2019 edition of our Council newsletter! There are a LOT of events coming up, so make sure to read all the way through to the end. H ere's a few quick -- but important! -- notices before we get into the news:

  • Our regular monthly business meeting is this Tuesday, September 10, starting at 7:30 p.m. We moved from our usual second Wednesday of the month, which this year falls on 9/11. (More on that below.) As usual, a great home-cooked dinner will be served around 6:30 p.m. There are many BIG events being planned for the fall, and we need our members' help and support to make these events the amazing success they always are. All members should attend!

  • No Student Parking at our Building! With the startup of classes at Carmel High School, we remind our members that there is no student parking anywhere around our building -- front, driveway, or in the county parking lot. The few spots the county has designated for Council use are for our building tenants and for members with business in our building during the day. We hope to be able to revisit the issue of student parking once our building is no longer needed for temporary use as the county's Carmel senior center. But for now, please remind your students that they may not park at or behind the Council during school hours.

  • Bartenders Needed! Our Home Corporation is once again putting out the call to members who may be interested in tending bar in our Lounge. A roster of quality bartenders is important to our Council, considering both that our Lounge is our social hub, and that rental income supports the operations and maintenance of our building. Please speak with Anthony Falco or Rich Keating for more information.
Putnam 9/11 Memorial Services This Wednesday

On Wednesday, September 11th, the annual Putnam County Candlelight Vigil will be held at Spain Cornerstone Park (Route 52 & Fair Street) at 8 p.m.

This is always a moving ceremony, where we remember not only those from our community who made the ultimate sacrifice on 9/11, but also those who have succumbed to illness from the recovery efforts.

Two names will be added to the memorial this year: Lt. Thomas Roberts of Mahopac (FDNY) and Det. Thomas Lyons of Carmel (NYPD), who died as a result of their actions in the aftermath of the September 11th attacks. Their plaques will join those of our eight Putnam Heroes who died on September 11th, and seven other Putnam Heroes who have passed since that fateful day.

Immediately preceding the ceremony, there will be a Mass of Remembrance at St. James the Apostle Church starting at 7:00 p.m.

As we do each year, our council will host a coffee reception immediately following the ceremony.

Please bring your family to the Mass, vigil, and reception. The great turnout each year is proof that Putnam will never forget our fallen heroes.

In the event of rain, the ceremonies will be held in our council hall.
KofC Funding Disaster Relief for Hurricane Victims

The Knights of Columbus announced it will donate at least $250,000 in assistance to the Bahamas in the wake of Hurricane Dorian.

Local Knights have already begun to help the islands’ more than 70,000 residents who are coping with the massive destruction caused by the natural disaster.

Members of the Knights of Columbus are also preparing to help those in Georgia and the Carolinas affected by Dorian.

In the Bahamas, Knights are helping to coordinate relief efforts — along with the Archdiocese of Nassau, Catholic Charities, Crossroads Alliance, Aerobridge and Angel Flight — to fly and ship supplies into the various islands of the Bahamas.

“The funds we announce today complement the work that our members are carrying out on the ground,” said Supreme Knight Carl Anderson. “When disaster strikes, we strike back with service.”

The category 5 hurricane made landfall on Sept. 1, with maximum winds of 185 mph, becoming the strongest storm in modern record for the northwestern Bahamas. Within 24 hours, the Knights raised more than $100,000 through its Disaster Relief Fund, with the funding going to purchase immediate needs such as canned foods, water, hygiene kits and baby supplies.

The Knights are also sending blankets, air mattresses, portable gas stoves, solar generators and other basic necessities

Archbishop Patrick Pinder of Nassau thanked the Knights for their “concern and support.”

“We would be in miserable state and lacking hope without this kind of assistance,” Archbishop Pinder wrote in a letter to the Knights’ Florida state organization. “This is an excellent example of charity and solidarity. I am profoundly grateful.”

Since January 2017, Knights have raised nearly $7 million and volunteered hundreds of hours to help victims of natural disasters in North America, including massive hurricanes in the U.S. and Puerto Rico, wild fires in California and flooding.
Best Oktoberfest! is Back on Oct. 5th!

Oktoberfest time is here again and our Council's celebrations have been so outstanding the last few years that we're doing it all again! Join us on Saturday, October 5th for authentic German food, German beer, and live German music from the famous Austrian Boys Band !
Our doors and our lounge will open at 2 p.m. , and we'll be featuring imported German beers on tap and serving German appetizers (Bavarian pretzels, bratwurst, potato pancakes and more!) from 2-5 p.m. The band will start at 4 p.m. and we'll hold our annual Stein Lifting Contest at 5.

Then at 5:30, we'll start serving a home-made full schnitzel dinner with all the sides (red cabbage, mashed potatoes, green beans amandine, hunter gravy), including apple strudel a la mode for dessert.
After dinner, we'll be raffling off our door prize(s), pulling the winner of our 50/50 raffle, and awarding a prize for our Best Dressed Contest (so dress your best!).

For only $20 prepaid ($25 at the door) you get admission, appetizers, dinner, dessert, and one draft beer. Contact event chairman Mike Bock to prepay or for more info. Don't miss it!

NOTE: Our next Oktoberfest Committee meeting is Wednesday, September 18th at 7 p.m. We'll also discuss plans for the Annual Dinner Dance (see item below). All are welcome to help out.
Columbus Day Parade in Mahopac - Sun. Oct. 6th

Join us as we honor the patron of our Order, Christopher Columbus, along with the contributions of Italian-Americans to our nation, as we march in the annual Putnam County Columbus Day Parade in Mahopac on Sunday, October 6th .

With the important legacy and contributions of Columbus under attack from the forces of political correctness, it is more important than ever that we have a strong turnout to march proudly behind our council banner, just as we do for St. Patrick's Day! As always, this is a family event , so bring along your family to march, and wear a KofC shirt, hat, or jacket.

Lineup for the parade will be at 1:30 p.m., with the parade stepping-off at 2:30 p.m. Please arrive at our council by no later than 1:00 p.m. if you wish to carpool over to the lineup area from our council.
"See You In September" Comedy Night - Seats Available!

We still have a few seats left for another great night of comedy dinner theater at our Council on Saturday, September 21st! But you have to act now !

Sunday Cash Bingo Returns on 9/22 to Benefit Pediatric Cancer Charities

Join us for another rewarding afternoon of Sunday Cash Bingo presented by our Ladies Auxiliary on September 22nd !

September is Pediatric Cancer Awareness Month, so all monies raised will go to support pediatric cancer charities , including the Ty Louis Campbell Foundation and local families.

As always, our bingo features big cash payouts and a $500 JACKPOT ! Admission is only $30. Doors open at 1 p.m., first game at 2 p.m. Attendance is limited to the first 100 players. Complimentary coffee and cake. Bell jar tickets will be sold.

The feedback on our food last year was so positive that this year we will once again be using Sauro's Town Square Cafe , featuring outstanding Italian cuisine including antipasto, hot appetizers, a hot buffet dinner, and fine desserts.
Plus, since nobody does a carving station better than we do, we'll again be serving hand-carved filet mignon with dinner prepared by our own in-house chefs! If you enjoy our masterpiece of charcoal grilled prime beef at the Council Golf Outing, Men's Beefsteak, or the Ladies Auxiliary Appreciation Dinner, you know that this is something really special!

MEETING NOTICE
The next meeting of the Fourth Degree Sir Knights will be Thursday, September 19 at our Council. All Fourth Degree members are welcome!
Support the C&B Program

It's once again time to join with KofC councils across New York State and raise funds for important charities by selling tickets to the annual Charitable & Benevolent Program raffle.

Not only are there $50,000 in cash prizes -- including the $25,000 Grand Prize -- but our council keeps a portion of the cash from the sales to help with our own charitable efforts.

Due to the high costs of doing a mailing to the entire membership, this year we will not be mailing out booklets except upon request. You may also pick them up at our monthly Council business meetings, or speak with the bartender on duty in the Lounge.

Resorts World Catskills Casino Trip - Oct. 19th

  • FOP Golf Outing - Fri., Oct. 4th: Our friends in the F.O.P. Driscoll Lodge are holding the Second Annual "JO" Memorial Golf Outing at Putnam County Golf Course. The price is still the same low $150 per golfer, or $600 for a foursome. There is a discount for early sign up. There is a great BBQ lunch afterwards for a small fee.   • Seminarian's Dinner - Monday, Nov. 4: We will once again be supporting our diocese's seminarians at St. Joseph's Seminary (Dunwoodie) by taking a table and a journal ad for the annual Westchester-Putnam Chapter Charities Seminarian's Dinner at Fr. Dunphy Council in White Plains. The cost is $40 per person and dinner starts at 6:30 p.m. This is always a fun night where we get the honor of meeting and dining with our seminarians -- the future of our church! Speak with GK Steve if you are interested in attending.
