Mrs. Denton brings deep expertise and experience in special education instruction, student support systems, and social-emotional learning to her role as Director of Student Services. New RIDE Attendance Tool

This year, The Narragansett School System will be rolling out the new Rhode Island Department of Education, (RIDE,) attendance tool. This tool allows us to work directly with parents and guardians through a new form of communication regarding attendance concerns.

Research shows that chronic absenteeism is associated with a number of negative consequences for students, including lower achievement, disengagement from school, course failure, and increased risk of dropping out. We hope this new implementation helps us stay engaged and connected with our school community for increased success through attendance.

To learn more about this tool and how it works, please click on the button below.
Community Heating Assistance

The Tri-County Community Action Agency is sharing more information about a community action program,  LiHEAP  (and Good Neighbor Fund) to residents in the Narragansett area.

This federal program assists income eligible homeowners and renters alike in paying their heat/utility bills. Staff approve applications and award grants to help ease the strain on their family budgets. In addition to the monetary grant, the agency can assist with weatherization measures that convert drafty inefficient dwellings into warm energy conserving homes.

If you or someone you know could benefit from this wonderful program, please review the below information, which includes heating assistance income guidelines, a flyer and brochure regarding other available services through this agency.

Helping Students With Stress

A Message from our Friends at the Narragansett Prevention Partnership:

Parents, do you find it stressful to see your kids stressed by the pressures they are under? Narragansett Prevention Partnership is pleased to announce 2 new ways we’ve developed to help kids learn to deal with and reduce their stress during the school day.

“Mindful Mariners” will begin on November 20th the at NHS as drop-in practice sessions to teach effective stress management skills. Mindful Mariners sessions are available to all NHS students by simply signing
up with their Advisor.

Also launching this month is a de-stress video library resource for classroom teachers at NPS & NES. This
library includes 30 second to 2 minute videos of deep breathing, relaxation, or energizing exercises that
are a gift from a group of NHS students to help address stress in younger students. The videos are being
released 2 at a time so that staff can be trained in their objectives and proper use.

You can be part of your child’s stress reduction solution by asking your NES or NPS student to show you
what they’ve learned through the videos or encouraging your high school student to sign up for a "Mindful Mariner" session. The stress management skills kids learn in school can carry over to every facet of their
lives.
NSS Educator Highlight
Each month, we are happy to share a little more about one of our educators here at our schools. We hope this will help better connect you with the wonderful individuals who work hard to give our students the best experience each year, while learning fun facts about them.
Peg Fair, School Nurse at Pier Middle School

How long have you been working within the Narragansett School System and what do you do?
I have worked at the Pier School for the past twenty years as the school nurse.

Where are you originally from?
I am originally from New Jersey. My grandparents moved here in 1958 and my family visited during the summer. After I grew up, my parents and younger siblings moved to Narragansett as well. I remained in New Jersey until my husband's job took us to Wisconsin, Brr!! I missed my family and Narragansett, so after two cold winters my family moved to RI and we love living in Narragansett.

What is your favorite part about working at your school?
My favorite part of working at the Pier is supporting our students and their families as they grow through the tremendous changes of middle school. I am blessed to work with a very supportive and dedicated faculty and staff.

Do you have any hobbies outside of the school day that you like to enjoy?
I love to garden and walk along the ocean. I also love to play with my grandchildren as well as kayak and bike when I can.

What is one thing that your students and staff may not know about you!
I never thought I would be a school nurse as I worked in hospitals and home care for many years before I worked in a school. I worried I would miss the busy hustle and bustle of that environment, but quickly fell in love with what I do and am so happy to be here.

We're Here to Help Students Reach Success!

For students who need extra math, literacy or behavioral support throughout the year, we have interventions in place to support them.

Every 6 weeks, the Multi-Tiered System of Support, or the MTSS team, which includes the classroom teacher, principal, and interventionists, look at assessment data, grade assessments and class work to identify the need and intervention needed to help your child succeed.

As a reminder, if you receive a letter of notification that your child is now receiving an intervention, please call your child's teacher for a specific explanation. Additionally, if you would like to help increase this support at home, you can have your child use Dreambox for math support or you can work with your child's interventionist for additional literacy resources.

Unity Day 2019

On Wednesday, October 23rd, NPS celebrated Unity Day with students in all classes!

Unity Day, which is symbolized by the color ORANGE, helps bring awareness that all youth should be safe from bullying. The day promotes students to come together and wear orange to color our nation, and even the world, visibly showing that our society believes that no child should ever experience bullying.

Students also signed a Unity Day banner during lunch and participated in advisory activities that included:
  • A conversation with students about Unity Day
  • Having students write what Unity means to them on the orange strips of paper, which were then linked and displayed as a sign of Unity at NPS.

Thank you to our staff and students for helping our district bring awareness to this important topic!
