Before Maggie Daly Park...

Generations of Chicagoans grew up skating on frozen lagoons and flooded athletic fields, pursuing winter activities in Chicago parks and forest preserves, including Humboldt and Garfield Parks.

The Chicago Tribune sponsored the first annual Silver Skates Derby on Humboldt Park’s frozen lagoon in 1917, where “128 of the fastest skaters in the central west” competed, and a crowd of 30,000 spectators gathered to watch the event as seen in the photo above.

Belmont Cragin's loss is the Near West Side's gain. After failing to get approval on his first choice for a section of Hanson Park, Chicago Fire Football Club owner Joe Mansueto announced building the team's new training center on a 30-acre site at 1459 W. Roosevelt Road. Once a Chicago Housing Authority (CHA) complex, the buildings were demolished in 2007. Several small residential and commercial buildings surround the area now, and the park, still owned by the CHA, has a small playground and softball fields.
Work continues on 10-story high Clarendale Six Corners. Going up on a triangular wedge of land at 4715 W. Irving Park Road, the 18,000 square-foot mixed-use project has ground-level retail space topped by senior living apartments divided between independent, assisted living, and memory care. Amenities will include chef-equipped and private dining venues, a theater, continuing education services, a fitness center, salon, and spa. The building is part of a four-acre project called The Point at Six Corners which will include an Aldi's and a pedestrian plaza with art installation.

And Sears? Demolition has begun on the former Sears at Six Corners. Per Block Club Chicago, the redevelopment finally passed the City Council vote in September 2021. Debate and objections to the project centered on the total number of affordable units.

The development creates studio, one and two-bedroom apartments ranging from $2,750 to $3,000 per month; plans include a pool, dog walk, and communal areas with ground-floor retail. Only six units will be affordable for people earning 60% of the area's median income, with the developer meeting the affordability requirement by paying about $2 million into the City's Affordable Housing Opportunity Fund.
