'Homelessness: Unpacking the Point in Time Count" this Thursday
at Wake Up! with United Way

Is homelessness on the rise locally? Nationally? How do we know what the trends are and who makes up this population? Join us on Thursday, September 12th, as the Rev. Forrest Gilmore, Executive Director of Shalom Community Center, takes us through the data, as well as the volunteer-intensive process for gathering it each year.

Reserve your spot today to join friends and co-workers from 7:45-9 a.m. at The Mill to deepen your awareness about this topic. Come with questions for our speaker or just listen and learn!

Breakfast by One World Catering included in your $10 ticket.

Wake Up! with United Way is a collaborative project of United Way of Monroe County and Indiana University's Political and Civic Engagement Program, with thanks to Old National Bank for series support.

A message from Efrat: Help Solve Today's Problems

In 1887, a Denver woman, a priest, two ministers and a rabbi got together... It sounds like the beginning of a bad joke, but they didn't walk into a bar; what they did was recognize the need to work together in their community in new ways, in order to make it a better place.

It is hard to not draw some parallels between these times and the late 19th century, as once again we are in the midst of social and economic disruption. Clearly, these challenges will require us to collectively think in new ways. Thus, I turn to the same playbook, and invite everyone to come together to discuss, coordinate, and help solve today’s problems. Will you please join this conversation?

Jim Sims announced United Way 2019-20 Campaign Chair

“Let’s do this better than we’ve ever done before!”

At the Past Chairs Luncheon, Jim Sims was introduced as the United Way Community Campaign Chair for the 2019-20 “Change Begins with You” fundraising campaign. Jim will lead fellow volunteers in inspiring donors to deepen the impact of United Way of Monroe County and 24 member agencies.

“This is such an honor. I wear this bracelet that says, “Never tire of doing good.” This is my passion for community service. One of the reasons I think United Way is so essential to this community is that there are people who work hard – but still don’t make a lot of money -- and it’s very important that we support social service agencies, like United Way, who help them and their children get through life.”

A recent retiree from Indiana University’s Residential Programs and Services Division, Jim now fills his days as a dedicated public servant on the Bloomington City Council. He has a distinguished record as a public servant and community leader. We’re delighted to have his passion for attending to our community’s greatest needs and his respected leadership chairing the campaign this year.

United Way of Monroe County is a nonprofit organization that improves people's lives by addressing critical needs today and working to reduce those needs tomorrow. Through our Community Action Fund and grant initiatives, we work with 24 member agencies and other community partners to ensure families have opportunities and everyone can meet basic living needs.
