Now Would Be a Good Time for the Board to....

By now, schools are probably settling into the online teaching routine. The immediate panic, planning phase to close schools and switch to online learning is over. We are in a new phase of the temporary new normal. Boards and Heads are planning and problem solving around so many issues from finances, enrollment, fundraising, etc.

With all the responsibilities and worries that boards have right now, let me share one simple act that Boards can do that is so important. Say thank you. Take a moment to express your gratitude to your Head of School, the faculty and staff. Your school's administration, faculty and staff need to know you recognize their Herculean efforts during this time and that you have their backs! Show them you are going to support them and that you are committed to standing by them to see your school through this crisis. Here are some ways you can do this:

W rite a formal letter to the Head, faculty and staff expressing the Board's appreciation and gratitude for how they are all stepping up to meet the demands of this crisis and the needs of the students and families.
H ave each trustee right personal thank you notes to faculty and staff;
S end a fun video message that includes a clip from each trustee 'taking their hats off' to the administration, faculty and staff.
M ake plans for a board sponsored celebration when faculty, staff and administration can safely reunite!
A nnounce a special donation to the school from the board to help with unexpected operational expenses!
There are many ways the Board can show their support; be creative with this! Share your ideas on our Online Forum!

Receiving a sincere and heartfelt expression of appreciation and gratitude from the Board of Trustees would be a wonderful morale booster for your Head, faculty and staff during this difficult time.
As the stewards and caretakers of your school, let them know you are present, ready to support and partner with the Head to insure that the school can survive and thrive during this challenge.
