OPPORTUNITIES FOR SCHOOLS  

Teachers of Critical Languages Program - NEW! 
Program Dates: 2020-21 School Year
Application Deadline: January 27, 2020
The Teachers of Critical Languages Program (TCLP), funded by the US State Department and administered by American Councils, places fully funded EFL teachers from China, Egypt, and Morocco in US K-12 host schools for an academic year. The exchange teachers teach either Mandarin Chinese or Modern Standard Arabic, and will also serve as a cultural resource in the host school and community. TCLP funds teachers' salaries, healthcare, R/T airfare, training, professional development, and ongoing program support. Host schools provide mentorship and community support for TCLP teachers. The program also offers additional partially funded options. TCLP is a GREAT way to start or grow an Arabic or Mandarin language program at your school.

TABLE FOR TWO - Change the World with Onigiri - #Onigiri Action
Program Dates: Oct 7 - Nov 20, 2019
TABLE FOR TWO (TBT), a global nonprofit with roots in Japan, addresses the related issues of hunger and obesity through a unique "meal-sharing" program that connects healthy eating with food donations to children in need. This fall, TFT will once again sponsor their World Food Day campaign called #OnigiriAction. Schools are encouraged to take part in this fun, educational, and yummy service activity, featuring the popular Japanese food "onigiri" (rice ball). Students make, decorate, and eat rice balls, and then post pictures of their onigiri enjoyment on the TFT website. Each onigiri photo post brings 5 school meals to children in need. This is a great classroom or school-wide activity that integrates health, culture, art, and community service.

NaTakallam - NEW!
You can bring refugee voices directly into your classroom with virtual programs from NaTakallam. NaTakallam creates opportunities for students around the world to interact with forcibly displaced persons and refugees, providing them with economic opportunity, purpose, and re-gained dignity. There are two program tracks available: language learning in Arabic, Spanish or French for world language classes, and global issues for social studies, history, or ELA classes. Both tracks offer students the opportunity to connect and learn from Syrians, Iraqis, and Venezuelans, Hondurans, and others who fled their countries due to conflict. Thanks to special funding, NaTakallam is able to meet 100% of financial need for its Middle East sessions.

Global Classrooms DC
Program Dates: SY2019-20
App Deadline: Ongoing
Registration is open for Global Classrooms DC (GCDC), the flagship program of the United Nations Association of the National Capital Area (UNA-NCA). Through global education curriculum and Model UN mini-simulations, GCDC helps prepare globally aware citizens, educates students on international issues and the work of the United Nations, while strengthening key skills including public speaking, group collaboration, negotiation, and writing. GCDC provides curriculum and professional development, and organizes exciting Model UN Conferences, including their annual spring conference at the US State Department. The program serves students in grades 5-12 in public, public charter, private, international schools, home-school co-ops, and student leadership organizations in the US and internationally. Teachers and club leaders are encouraged to apply.

JET Ambassadors Program (Classroom visits)
The Japan Exchange and Teaching (JET) Program, sponsored by the Japanese government, brings young American college graduates to Japan to teach English in Japanese schools as teaching assistants. The JET Ambassadors Program arranges for local JET alumni to visit interested school classrooms and share their personal experiences from Japan. These are young adults who provide interactive presentations on topics ranging from school life in Japan and geography to Japanese culture, food, and others.

OPPORTUNITIES FOR STUDENTS  

Kennedy-Lugar Youth Exchange and Study (YES) Abroad Program
Program Dates: 2020-21 School Year 
Application Deadline: Dec 3, 2019
The Kennedy-Lugar YES Abroad Program, sponsored by the US State Department, offers American high school students and recent graduates full merit-based scholarships to live and study for one academic year in countries of strategic importance. For SY2020-21, students may live in one of the following countries: Bosnia & Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Ghana, India, Indonesia, Jordan, Malaysia, Morocco, North Macedonia, the Philippines, Senegal, Thailand, and Turkey. The program includes home stay and high school experiences that are intended to increase mutual understanding between American youth and young people abroad, and to deepen appreciation for religious diversity. Participants also gain valuable immersion in a less commonly taught language. Applicants must be US citizens, 15-18 years of age, and high school students at the time of application.

Operation Understanding DC - NEW!
Program Dates: January-December 2020
Application Deadline: November 22, 2019
Operation Understanding DC (OUDC)'s mission is to build a generation of African American and Jewish community leaders who promote respect, understanding, and cooperation while working to eradicate racism, anti-Semitism and all forms of discrimination.  Each fall OUDC selects African American and Jewish juniors from DC area schools for their Social Justice Fellowship to take part in this one-year (Jan-Dec) leadership program.  Students learn about their respective histories and cultures, take part in a 3-week summer travel program to sites of historic interest to African Americans and Jews, and return the following fall for leadership training and to lead diversity workshops. This is a great program for students with leadership potential and an interest in social justice and cross-cultural understanding. The program is FREE.

The Bronfman Fellowship - NEW!
Program Dates: June 28 - August 5, 2020 plus follow-up in SY2020-21
Application Deadline: December 1, 2019
Each year twenty-six (26) outstanding North American teenagers are selected as Bronfman Fellows. The highlight of the Fellowship is a five week, all-expenses-paid Summer Fellowship in Israel. During the summer program, Fellows encounter the land and people of Israel, study major issues of contemporary Jewish life, meet current influential leaders, engage with Israeli peers, and learn about themselves and each other. The Fellowship year continues with monthly virtual experiences, a spring seminar in the eastern US, and ongoing association with the Bronfman Fellows alumni network. Students in the 11th grade (juniors), who self-identify as Jewish, and will be 16 years old or older by June 28, 2020, are eligible to apply.

Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange Program (CBYX)
Program Dates: 2020-21 School Year
Application Deadline: Dec 3, 2019
The Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange (CBYX) Program offers American high school students the opportunity to live and study abroad in Germany for a full academic year through joint sponsorship by the US Congress and the German Bundestag. This fully funded program includes cultural immersion through living with a host family and attending a German high school; intensive language course upon arrival in Germany; meetings with German and US government officials.; and cultural excursions. Eligible students must be US citizens, aged 15-18, with a GPA of 3.0 or higher. CIEE administers the selection process and the program for Washington, DC.

High School Diplomats (HSD US)
Program Dates: July 22-Aug 2, 2020
Application Deadline: Jan 8, 2020
HSD US is a fully funded 10-day summer program at Princeton University that provides 40 American students the opportunity to engage in academic and social pursuits, and forge lifelong friendships with 40 Japanese students of the same age. During the program on the Princeton campus, each American student is paired with a Japanese roommate. Only high school sophomores and juniors are eligible to apply. Those American students who successfully complete HSD US are eligible to apply for a full scholarship to travel to Japan for a month the following summer.

Congress-Bundestag Vocational Youth Exchange Program (CBYX)
Program Dates: 2020-21 School Year
Application Deadline: Jan 15, 2020
This is a fully funded gap year or 13th year abroad for graduating US high school students with a vocational or career education background (the organizers use a very broad definition of vocational/career education). Twenty-five (25) graduating seniors will be selected for this "Young Adult" program. Co-funded by the US Congress and the German Bundestag, and administered by Nacel Open Door, this prestigious program is for mature and motivated high school graduates, 18 or 19 years old by July 1 of the departure year, and US citizens, with a minimum GPA of 3.0. Prior German language study is not required. Participants will engage in two months of intensive German language training, host family placement, training/school attendance, and hands-on experience through an internship with a German company. This is a great opportunity; Germany is known internationally for the excellence of its vocational programs.

Experiment Leadership Institute - India
Program Dates: June 30-Aug 3, 2020
Application Deadline: Jan 15, 2020
World Learning's Experiment Leadership Institute is a highly competitive, fully funded program for high school students with demonstrated interest in intercultural leadership, global issues, and civic engagement. The Summer 2020 Leadership institute, India: Community Development and Public Health, is open to rising seniors who are 16-18 years of age at the time of the program. The program consists of a 4-day leadership seminar in DC, four weeks in India, concluding with 4 days of project planning sessions in Brattleboro, Vermont at the School for International Training (SIT) campus. A follow-up student project is required. In India, in addition to cultural exposure, the program will focus on leadership development, with in-depth discussions on public health, human rights, and social change. Fifteen (15) full scholarships are available.

This is a unique opportunity to design your own global professional learning experience! Fund for Teachers enriches the personal and professional growth of teachers by recognizing and supporting them as they identify and pursue opportunities around the globe that will have the greatest impact on their practice, the academic lives of their students, and on their school communities. Full-time PK-12 teachers, with at least 3 years teaching experience, may apply for up to $5,000 individually or a team of teachers may apply for up to $10,000 for a summer learning experience of their own design.

The Institute for Middle East Studies and the Center for Contemporary Arab Studies (CCAS) offer this free workshop on Iran for area teachers. Participants will hear from a range of perspectives that contextualize contemporary Iranian history and culture within the framework of regional and global dynamics. The program is free. Globalize DC Seeking Volunteers for its Japanese Plus Program
Japanese Plus is Globalize DC's innovative afterschool Japanese language, culture, and career exposure program open to DC public high school students in DCPS or DC charter schools. We have a range of volunteer opportunities available for adults who wish to support the program. Knowledge of the Japanese language is not a requirement.

Learning Life Seeking Mentors for its Family Diplomacy Initiative
Learning Life is a DC-based educational nonprofit that connects families across borders to nurture a more peaceful, caring world. As part of its work, it runs an international mentoring program that connects kids in Washington DC, San Salvador, El Salvador, and Dakar, Senegal with caring adults in metro DC who have experience or interest in world affairs. Mentors meet at least once per month, usually on weekends, with their mentee virtually or in-person to help them learn about the wider world. Learning Life uses mentors for young people in all three locations.
