Craven County Schools Celebrates US News Best School Rankings

The US News and World Report recently published the first-ever rankings of public elementary and middle schools, and the news is good for Craven County Schools: 4 schools earned a Best Elementary
Schools Badge and 1 school earned a Best Middle Schools Badge because they place among the top 30% in the state. Public elementary and middle schools that earned U.S. News rankings in the top 30%
in their state gained eligibility to display a U.S. News award “badge” (logo). In addition to the Best Elementary Schools and Best Middle Schools badges.
For each state, schools were assessed on their pupils’ proficiencies in mathematics and reading, as measured by state assessment tests. Half of the ranking formula was the results themselves; the other half was the results in the context of socioeconomic demographics. In other words, the top-ranked schools are high-achieving ones that succeeded in educating all of their students. All data for the rankings are from third-party sources, including the U.S. Department of Education.
Based on the rankings, the following elementary schools were designated to receive a Best Elementary
School Badge:
● AH Bangert Elementary School
● Creekside Elementary School
● Graham A. Barden Elementary School
● WJ Gurganus Elementary School

Based on the rankings, the following middle school was designated to receive a Best Middle School
Badge:
● Tucker Creek Middle School

The New Bern Noble Knights Chess Club is a new program to teach our youth how to play chess. This 12-week program begins on Monday, January 24th at 5:30 pm at the police department substation inside New Bern Mall.

New Bern Noble Knights is a community-policing program designed to build and maintain strong relationships with middle school-aged youth. Through coaching, mentoring and team building, police department staff and volunteers will teach students the basics of chess and help them develop advanced skills. There is no cost to participate and no prior chess knowledge or experience is required. Parents are welcome to participate so that they can learn the game and play chess with their kids at home. The club will meet regularly on Mondays at 5:30pm at the substation. The 12-week session wraps up on April 11th.

Kids and parents who are interested should complete an application and return it to the New Bern Police Department, 601 George Street, between 8am and 5pm Monday through Friday (except holidays) or bring it to the first session in January. For questions, contact Sgt. K. Brice at bricek@newbernnc.gov or by phone at (252)672-4238.
