NES November News
Greetings Families,

We are adjusting to the cooler temperatures and are well into the school year! Students have been doing a lot of reading and writing, mostly exploring how to make themselves stronger readers and how to bring their writing to life through various revision and editing strategies. Science exploration has been done outside for many grades- the garden is a perfect place for observation. Math focus is explaining their thinking mathematically!

I'd like to thank all the families for participating in the PTO events! It is so important for the children to see the school/ family connection. By parents attending or helping organize these events the children also see the importance of being a member of the community, and how volunteering adds to each event. If you are interested in event volunteering please contact the PTO to discuss opportunities.

Now that several holidays will be upon us, please adhere to the healthy food policy for celebrations. It is so nice to offer a special treat to celebrate, however please make sure there is a healthy component and from a food-safe vendor- not homemade . Additionally, all treats should also come with a list of ingredients to view to ensure allergy safety. If you have any questions consult with your child's classroom teacher.
Thank you and happy fall!

Lisa Wilson
Principal of Narragansett Elementary School

Family Celebrations at NES

Pumpkin Carving & Illumination Walk

On October 24th, Families came together at NES to carve pumpkins in preparation for the annual Pumpkin Illumination Walk! There were seeds and pulp a plenty with both parents and students having a wonderful time creating.

The Illumination Walk was attended by many families with lots of fantastic illuminated pumpkins displayed along the route. During the event, the Narragansett Fire Department showed students the trucks and fire house. The NHS FFA team also brought baby goats for children to meet and pet. Attendees enjoyed the night with food, apple cider and donuts, and Music to get everyone in the fall mood. Thank you to everyone who attended.
School Lunch Reminders and Payment Information

We want to remind parents and guardians of students who purchase hot lunch to please make sure you send in payments or login to  My School Bucks  to set up an account.

The account will allow your child to easily purchase breakfast/lunch from funds on your account. Please contact the office for your child's ID number to set up an account. For accounts that are not set up yet, students will be charged for lunch.

Don't forget we're still accepting applications for Free and Reduced Lunch . The application remains the same as past years. You can view, download and print the application online by clicking the button below. You can also email your completed application to Alyssa Paglia at  Apaglia@nssk12.org  as well as ask any questions about the program.
We're Here to Support Success!

For students who need extra math, literacy or behavioral support throughout the year, we have interventions in place to support them.

Every 6 weeks, the Multi-Tiered System of Support, or the MTSS team, which includes the classroom teacher, principal, and interventionists, look at assessment data, grade assessments and class work to identify the need and intervention needed to help your child succeed.

As a reminder, if you receive a letter of notification that your child is now receiving an intervention, please call your child's teacher for a specific explanation. Additionally, if you would like to help increase this support at home, you can have your child use Dreambox for math support or you can work with your child's interventionist for additional literacy resources!
MEET the Intervention Team

NES has an intervention team as a part of the MTSS process. These teachers provide students with additional math and/ or reading support. They support students who have been identified as needing a boost of support through an assessment data review.

NES Chorus Participates in Music
Fifty five students from our 4th grade chorus participated is a district wide music event. There were about 150+ performers from grades 4-12 and 60 professional musicians. Everyone came together to perform, "When You Believe" from the Prince of Egypt. It was a magical night! Thanks to Molly Hammell and other district music teachers for their organization and coordination.

Attendance is IMPORTANT!
DID YOU KNOW?

  • Starting in kindergarten, too many absences can cause children to fall behind in school.
  • Missing 10 percent (or about 18 days) can make it harder to learn to read.
  • Students can still fall behind if they miss just a day or two days every few weeks.
  • Being late to school may lead to poor attendance.
  • Absences can affect the whole classroom if the teacher has to slow down learning to help children catch up.

Attending school regularly helps children feel better about school—and themselves. Start building this habit in preschool so they learn right away that going to school on time, every day is important. Good attendance will help children do well in high school, college, and at work.

If your child is going to be absent please call the school at
792-9420 to inform us of the absence and the reason.
Volunteering

Whether the teacher has asked for classroom volunteers, field trip chaperones or PTO event support- You need a passed background check on file.
They are good for 1 year.
The link below will allow you access to necessary.

Dressing for Weather

Please dress the kids for the weather. This is difficult for this time of year due to the fluctuations in temperature. Jackets, sweatshirts and sneakers are the best alternatives.

Another word of advice is to label your child's clothing in case it ends up in the Lost and Found!
Money Mammals Kids Club

Thanks to the Westerly Community Credit Union, there are some free resources available for parents to use to teach kids financial education and how to manage money.
